The number one reason businesses switch accountants is because they are not proactive in enough their buisness.

Last years accountant may do your books and file your tax return, but what else?

- Are they running and filing payroll?
- Are they giving you guidance on where your buisness is headed?
- Are they doing proactive tax planning so that you are paying your fair share and not a penny more?
- Are they up to date on their systems, allowing more freedom for you?
- Are the fees recurring? The same each month? So you never get surprised

These are just some of the important things your accountant should be doing. Keep in mind even this is just the basics!

Just thought I’d share some buisness tips I’ve learned as a college student starting my own business…

1. The customer is everything. Doing a good job, for a reasonable price and providing great customer service is the easiest and best way to naturally grow your buisness in the long haul. Always put yourself in the shoes of your customer. It’s easier than you think to provide tremendous value to someone, find out how you can do it. Be creative in the ways you can help a client.

2. Marketing is very important. Do social media, have a google page, participate in networking events, get your name out there. Find out who you want to help, where they are, and go start conversations. Always be proactive.

3. Just do a good job. It’s that simple really. Know what your good at, and do it to the best of your ability every time. This will keep customers happy and coming back. NEVER short hand, half ass, or cheap out on work, it always comes back to bite you.

4. Keep your finances in order. Keep accurate records of exactly what goes in and out of the buisness. Especially in the starting stage, you should stay broke and pour all excess profits back into the buisness. Investing in yourself and your business will always generate the best returns.

Buisness slowing down? Good. Stop. Sit in it and learn. I see to many buisness owners noticing a decline, start scrambling with all their effort to “get it back to how it used to be.” I don’t think this is the right move. Often times you end up either making a mistake, or you don’t learn what caused the problem in the first place, and it happens again. So, if this happens, really put a lot of thought into the WHY instead of rushing to how do I get out!

Converting your LLC to an S-Corp once your buisness if profitable and growing is a must. Just for reference, a buisness making $100,000/year will save around $10,000 or more in taxes each year just by changing their legal structure. It takes 10 minutes online…

Making a decision based on price without even knowing what the offer entails is how 99% of people make decisions today.

Accounting is moving as fast as technology is, and todays methods are a lot different than in the years passed.

In 2023, Accounting should be fully in the cloud and automated, not on a desktop or piece of paper. This saves not only accountants, but also business owners countless hours of searching through files and inputing data. You should be able to access your financials anytime and anywhere, and if your accounting is not up to date, you may not even be able to do this!

A very common misunderstanding that I have run into a lot when talking with people who are looking to start a business is this:

They think that they need an LLC for tax purposes. However, the reality is that an LLC is really just a legal structure and as long as there is only one member being taxed as an LLC, there are are no "tax benefits" of creating one. The business owner would simply just put their business income and deductions on a schedule C on their personal tax return, whether a single member LLC or just a sole proprietor without the LLC!
