Budgets are one of the most important financial activities a business with jobs or projects can do.

Commercial or Residential; custom or standard; it does not really matter.

Budgets play an extremely crucial role in every product or service you have. 💰️

It applies to Fabricators and Manufacturers just as much as it does to Installers.

You hit your budgets, you will hit your profit margins built in for the year. 📈

Now what budgets are we talking about? There are numerous to identify and implement:

1. Operational Budgets (these are driven from estimates or quotes. You would have labor and material budgets for these.)

2. General and Administrative Budgets (these are determined at year end ideally and modified throughout year as needed.) There are many budgets that make up one G&A budget.

If all else is correct (there are a variety of others factors that could cause issues in profitability), then you should hit your target profit margins and expected rate of return for the job and the total as a business.

If you have all budgets set up in your accounting software or outside of it, great. Measuring and tracking actual vs budgets is the next step. You should be hitting them operationally and generally. Monitoring this is called variance analysis and a good Controller will look at this ongoing.

The sad truth is, however, you could have all budgets set up and hit them, but still be failing as a business (failing could mean a few things). That is because there are numerous other factors you have to consider as a whole a long with budgeting. But just know that without budgeting, you are missing a fundamental piece and are most likely overspending or underspending and not hitting margins. But you don’t know if you don’t have any!
