⏰Missed the 60-day rollover deadline? You may still have options.
A missed deadline can create tax consequences, but before assuming the damage is permanent, know these three potential paths:
✅ Automatic waiver: May apply when your financial institution received the funds and proper instructions on time, but its error delayed the deposit. Specific requirements and a correction deadline apply.
✅ Self-certification: Certain circumstances, such as serious illness, a misplaced uncashed check, or a postal error, may qualify you to submit a written certification to the receiving institution. You must complete the rollover promptly once the obstacle clears. This is not IRS approval, and eligibility can be reviewed later.
✅ Forthcoming ICRS process: The IRA Compliance Resolution System takes effect May 1, 2027. Formal rollover-waiver requests will transition from the private letter ruling process to ICRS during 2027 and 2028. It is not an immediate fix or a blanket extension.
These paths address the missed deadline; other rollover rules still apply.
Your next step: Gather your distribution dates, paperwork, and explanation for the delay. Ask your tax professional and plan administrator or IRA custodian to determine which route, if any, fits your situation.
