On this day in 1859, John Merrick was born enslaved in North Carolina.

By the 1890s he owned barbershops in Durham. In 1898 he co-founded North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company with Dr. Aaron Moore and C.C. Spaulding. It became the largest Black-owned firm in the country. In 1908 they helped launch Mechanics and Farmers Bank. Around them: pharmacies, a newspaper, real estate, Lincoln Hospital, what became N.C. Central.

W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington both came to Durham to see it. Parrish Street and the Hayti district were a working economy — Black-owned capital serving Black customers because white institutions would not.

That was not unique. Greenwood in Tulsa. Jackson Ward in Richmond. Sweet Auburn in Atlanta. Fourth Avenue in Birmingham. Memphis. Houston’s Third Ward. After emancipation, Black communities built their own banks, hotels, theaters, grocers, and insurance companies on their own streets.

Some of those districts were later destroyed by white supremacist violence. Tulsa in 1921 is the most famous. Others were cut apart later by highways and “urban renewal.” Durham’s Hayti was one of those.

The point is not only what was burned. It is what was built first — in the South, on their turf, in public, with names on the door. BUILD!!!

Sept 7 is Merrick’s birthday. The companies outlived him. The record is still there.

On this day in 1916, Clarence Saunders opened Piggly Wiggly in Memphis — the first self-service grocery store.
Before that, you stood at a counter and told a clerk what you wanted. He built a store where customers walked the aisles, chose the goods, and paid at a register.
Packaging, branding, and the modern supermarket all follow from that idea.
Two days ago it was Google in a garage. Today it’s a grocery store in Tennessee. The calendar is crowded with this stuff. Almost every day, somebody files the papers, opens the door, or tries a simpler way to do an old job. Most of it disappears. A few of those days remake how the world works.

September 4, 1998.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin walked into a California filing office and incorporated Google.

They were still Stanford doctoral students. The company lived in Susan Wojcicki’s garage in Menlo Park. The first real money was a $100,000 check from Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim — written to “Google Inc.” before the corporation even existed. They had to open a bank account just to cash it.

What they actually had was an idea that search should work by authority, not by who paid for placement or stuffed the most keywords. PageRank treated the web like a citation network. That single insight turned a chaotic directory into the default way billions of people find things.

No grand launch. No press tour. Just two founders, cheap hardware, and a belief that organizing information was a bigger problem than anyone in the industry was treating it as.

Twenty-eight years later that garage filing is Alphabet — search, maps, Android, YouTube, cloud, ads, and the infrastructure a large part of the internet still runs on.

Most “overnight” tech stories are not overnight. This one started with incorporation papers, a rented garage, and a ranking algorithm that was better than everyone else’s.
