A CONVERSATION ABOUT PERCEIVED VALUE:
A customer asked a hairdresser friend of mine how much it would cost to do this hair.
My friend gave her a proposal: $450
The customer responded: Thatβs seems really high.
My friend asked: What do you think is a reasonable price for this job?
The customer answered: $150 maximum
My friend responded: Ok, then I invite you to do it yourself.
The customer answered: I don't know how to.
My friend responded: Alright, then how about for $150 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you $300, you'll learn valuable skills that will benefit you in the future.
The customer answered: Sounds good! Letβs do it!
My friend responded: Great! To get started, you are going to need some tools. You will need lightener (bleach), developers, bowls, brushes, maybe a specialized color remover, other levels of developer, brushes, clips, foil, capes, multiple tubes of color, towels, gloves, combs, shampoo, conditioner, a sink,
toner and more developer made for the toner, scissors, texturizers, hair dryer or heat processor, hair styling products, curling iron and maybe a second set of hands to help you.
The customer answered: But I don't have any of those tools and I can't justify buying all of these for one color job.
My friend responded: Ok. Well then for an additional $200 I can let you use my tools to you to use for this project.
The customer answered: Okay. Thatβs fair.
My friend responded: Great! We can start this morning.
The customer answered: I work Monday through Friday. Iβm only available on the weekends.
My friend responded: If you want to learn from me then you will need to work when I work. This project will take anywhere from 3-7 hours depending on your hair lift and integrity of your hair⦠so you will need to make sure you have the time.
The customer answered: That means Iβm going to have to sacrifice my whole day?!
My friend responded: Thatβs true. Remember, when you do a job yourself you need to account for how much your hair lifted, and other factors or problems that arise.
The customer answered: What do you mean by that?
My friend responded: Doing a job completely from start to finish includes time spent on the consultation, make sure you have all the supplies, pick up materials, set up time, application time for the first process, application time for the second processβ¦pray to the hair gods that it worked, cutting and styling, drying time, finishing time and clean up.
Thatβs all in addition to the actual project itself. And speaking of materials, thatβs where we will start on Monday so I need you to meet me at the supply store at 9 and hope they have the stuff in stock.
The customer answered: What do you mean by βhave it in stock?β
My friend responded: Well, the supply stores have been really low in stock and I hope we can get the colors and developers you want.
The customer answered: You know, Iβm realizing that a lot more goes in to a job than what a customer sees in the finished project. Your proposal of $450 is very reasonable. I would like you to handle the project.
