Most will scroll past this picture and long post. It will seem irrelevant and insignificant or to some inappropriate. However, I hope you don't. It is a quick snapshot of in action.
Thursday was my daughter’s birthday and the company's Christmas party. I'm a single mother many states away from my family, so celebrating my 6-year-old’s special day is my sole responsibility. I am an officer in my organization, so not being present to express my gratitude to the staff for their hard work and dedication, especially during my transition to the organization and into this role, was not an option.
Everything considered, I decided to pick my daughter up earlier from aftercare and simply enjoy a short time with colleagues in passing. What you see in this picture is the fortunate ability to do both, be a mother and an executive.
So many brilliant women often forgo opportunities, aren’t offered advancement, impose limits on themselves, or select not to seek executive levels because of motherhood. For many, that is a welcomed no-brainer decision; for others, a reluctant resentful determination, but for myself, it's a choice I'm glad I have never had to make.
Sure, It's not easy; there are long hours, the occasional missed event, showing up late to practice, scrambling to find a caretaker, and dents in my car for rushing.
But let's talk about the genuine desire for equity and inclusion. No matter advancements in society, women are often still primary caretakers. In Black households, women are more likely to be the primary or sole providers. Seeking to diversify gender in tops roles means more moments like this may be necessary. This also has to be a part of the conversation.
So for every caretaker of loved ones, my Christmas wish for you is that you too are allowed to work in an environment where you don't have to choose, which needs to be even more amplified as we .
