As a scholar of institutions, I know that some organizations change systems. But sometimes, the leader is so synonymous with the work that the institution and the woman are inseparable.
Joy Atkinson was an institution all her own.
To so many Black women across this region, she was friend, mentor, confidant, and truth teller.
She was the connector.
The mother who gave birth to belief.
The architect of political careers.
The mastermind behind development that centered people, power, and purpose.
Through Laaawppi , Joy equipped women with everything necessary to believe in themselves. To win. To lead. To foster lasting change. One Black woman at a time. Quietly. Strategically. Relentlessly.
While this is a profound loss for the 400 alumnae of LAAAWPPI, it is an even greater loss for Black women across Los Angeles and the communities beyond. Many will never know the strategies she crafted, the lives she shaped, or the doors she unlocked behind the scenes.
And yet, every dream she helped nurture now walks the world carrying her imprint.
With a full heart, I say this. You will be missed in the flesh, Joy. But your legacy lives on in every woman who leads with courage because you first fostered within her how.
Generations will feel you. Always. 🕊️♥️🖤💚
