There is so much knowledge I want to shout from the rooftops. I am a teacher at heart after all. 😊 But what I want everyone to know is I really want to do is help.

βœ… Help get a budget together.
βœ… Help build a plan to get out of debt.
βœ… Help bring your goals and dreams to life.
βœ… Help you finally buy a house you never thought you could.... Like I did.
βœ… Help understand your retirement plan.
βœ… Help understand the difference between what benefits are offered at work and what there is available privately... And that it isn't as expensive as you might think.
βœ… Help you protect your family and your future.
βœ… ______________________________________

It all comes down to I just really want to help. It's who I am and it's what I do. I'd be honored to help you and your family.

Most Texas educators I talk to have never thought about disability insurance β€” until something happens.

Here's a stat worth sitting with: you're 3Γ— more likely to become disabled than to die during your working years. Yet most people have solid life insurance and zero disability coverage.

So what's the difference between short-term and long-term?

Short-term disability covers a portion of your income for 3–6 months after you're unable to work. It's designed for things like surgery recovery, a serious illness, pregnancy complications. Some school districts offer this β€” many don't.

Long-term disability kicks in after short-term ends and can cover you for years β€” sometimes all the way to retirement age. This is the one that protects your retirement savings. Without it, a serious illness or injury doesn't just cost you income now β€” it can wipe out everything you've saved.

TRS does offer a disability retirement option, but the qualifications are strict and the benefit may be less than you expect.

My honest take: if your district doesn't offer disability coverage (or it's minimal), a private long-term disability policy is one of the most important things you can own.

Want to know what you actually have through your employer and whether it's enough? I'll walk you through it β€” free, no obligation.

I hear this a lot: "I have life insurance through my work, so I'm covered."

And I have to gently push back β€” because being covered and being adequately covered are two very different things.

Most group life insurance through a job typically gives you 1Γ— your annual salary. So if you earn $52,000, your family gets $52,000 if something happens to you. That's roughly one year of income.

If you have a mortgage, kids at home, or a spouse who depends on your income β€” one year doesn't go very far.

The general rule of thumb is 10–12Γ— your annual income, especially during your working years. That sounds like a lot, but a $500,000 term policy for a healthy adult in their 30s or 40s often costs less than $25–$35/month.

The mistake most people make isn't buying too little β€” it's never reviewing what they already have. Your needs at 35 are very different from your needs at 55.

I do free life insurance reviews. We look at what you have, what you actually need, and whether you're overpaying (or undercovered). No pressure.

Most people assume retirement income just … appears. Social Security kicks in, the pension arrives, done.

But what if you're a Texas educator who left the classroom before vesting in TRS? Or a support staff member whose district didn't offer a 403(b) match? What if the pension is smaller than you expected?

Here's the honest truth: a pension is an income floor, not a full paycheck. Even a solid TRS benefit often covers 50–70% of pre-retirement income. The rest has to come from somewhere.

The good news is you can build that "somewhere" intentionally:

1. A 403(b) or IRA adds a second income stream you control
2. A fixed indexed annuity can create guaranteed income your pension doesn't cover
3. Cash value life insurance can bridge gaps in early retirement years
4. A 12-month emergency fund keeps you from cashing out investments when markets dip

The key is knowing your number BEFORE you retire β€” not after. I do a free retirement income review that maps out exactly what you'll have coming in and what gaps need filling.

Think of your retirement like three buckets πŸͺ£

Bucket 1: Your TRS pension β€” safety and guaranteed income.
Bucket 2: Your 403(b) or annuity β€” supplemental income when you need it.
Bucket 3: Long-term growth β€” building wealth that keeps up with life.

Most Texas school district employees are living entirely out of Bucket 1. That's a plan β€” but it's not the full picture.

Which bucket do you feel least prepared in? Drop a 1, 2, or 3 in the comments πŸ‘‡
