When one spouse dies, one Social Security check stops.
Say you get $2,800 a month and your spouse gets $1,200. That's $4,000 coming into the house. If you pass away, your spouse keeps the larger check, $2,800, and the $1,200 check stops. Your rent or mortgage doesn't drop with it.
The age you start collecting can change what your spouse receives. On a $2,000 benefit, claiming at 62 is about $1,400. Waiting until 70 could be about $2,480.
I put together a free lesson on how survivor benefits work, including the rules for divorced spouses. The link is in my bio.
Does your spouse know how much Social Security they could receive if something happened to you?

💰 **What happens to your spouse's Social Security check when you die?**

Here's something many married couples may not realize.

If you're both receiving Social Security and one of you passes away, the surviving spouse generally doesn't get to keep both checks.

For example, if one spouse receives $2,800 a month and the other receives $1,200, that's $4,000 coming into the household.

But when the higher-earning spouse dies, the survivor may receive $2,800 instead of $4,000, assuming they qualify for the full survivor benefit.

That's a $1,200 monthly difference.

And here's something else worth knowing: **the age you choose to claim Social Security can affect what your spouse receives after you're gone.**

📚 Our new FREE lesson explains survivor benefits, claiming ages, and what married and divorced couples should know.

Medicare open enrollment ends December 7. Have you looked at your plan yet? The Medicare plan you have today might not be the best plan for you next year. Every year, from October 15 through December 7, Medicare gives you an opportunity to review your coverage and make changes. Before the deadline, ask yourself: are my doctors still in my plan's network? Are my medications still covered? And what are my total healthcare costs going to look like next year? Any changes you make during this period generally take effect January 1. Save this video as a reminder. Have you already reviewed your Medicare plan for next year, or is that something you still need to do? Let me know in the comments! Educational content, not personalized advice.

A financial habit doesn't have to be complicated to make a difference.

Sometimes it begins with something as simple as looking at where your money went last week.

Not to criticize yourself. Not to feel guilty.

Just to understand your spending.

Because once you recognize a habit, you can begin changing it.

**Small decisions, repeated consistently, can make a meaningful difference over time.**

¿Cómo voy a lograrlo? ¿Y si no funciona? ¿Qué van a pensar mis amigos?

No dejes pasar otro año preguntándote qué hubiera sucedido.

**Date una oportunidad.**

Do you ever wonder if you're just not good enough? For six long years, I thought about starting Path to Financial Power. I kept questioning myself. How am I going to do this? What if it doesn't work? What are my friends going to think? What about my family? I kept waiting for the moment when I would feel completely ready. That moment never came, so I started. You don't have to have everything figured out before you begin, and you certainly don't need everybody's approval. Give yourself a chance. What's the goal you've been thinking about? Have a wonderful Monday!
