"I read that 82% of startups fail, should I just quit?"
"Of course not, a high number of people failing does not mean you will automatically fail. If everyone believed that, we'd get nothing done ever. Where did you hear that?"

So my client sent me the blog post he came across, and indeed at the start it made that claim:

"Here’s a harsh truth: 82% of startups don’t survive, all because of cash flow mismanagement."

Firstly, what differentiates a startup and a small business? There's no clear line where one moves to the other. I already don't like the vagueness here, but it does include a link to the source, so I check that out. This leads to another blog post on a different website. This blog is "The #1 Reason Small Businesses Fail" which includes an infographic sourced from yet another website, and it's there where we get the actual data.

82% of startups don't "fail"... the study shows that of the business that fail, 82% of them experienced cash flow issues.

The original blog my client sent me was attempting to use vague fear to incite a sale. If I had to sum my post up succinctly: check sources, read beyond headlines, and in the words of Douglas Adams, Don't Panic.

I'm not going to try to sell you something with fear, I do it with facts and math. Are you trained to do your own bookkeeping? How many hours do you spend each month doing your own books? How much more money could you be making if that time was instead spent towards getting more sales? Is that money more that what you'd be paying a bookkeeper to handle your books for you? If so, get a bookkeeper (i.e. let's talk)

We've all made mistakes, but good communication and preparation can help mitigate and prevent them.
