WEDNESDAY WISDOM 🤍

There is one piece of advice I give every couple who gets married here.

At some point during your wedding day, slip away together.

I often tell couples that if they're not using the mezzanine for guests, go upstairs, get some dessert and just sit together for a few minutes.

Because everybody wants a piece of you on your wedding day.

Your parents.
Your family.
Your friends.
Your photographer.
Your guests.

And that's wonderful. That's exactly what the day is about.

But amongst all of that, it's very easy to suddenly realise that you've barely had a moment with the person you actually came here to marry.

So take fifteen minutes.

Go for a walk. Sit somewhere together. Have some dessert.

Just the two of you, remembering why you're here and taking a moment to really enjoy it.

Because surely, that's the whole point. 🤍

One wedding.
A thousand little moments.

Before the dress goes on.

Before he sees her.

The people who have been there from the beginning.

The nervousness.
The ridiculousness.
The anticipation.

Then suddenly… it’s time.

And somehow, somewhere between the ceremony and the last dance, the nerves disappear and the whole day becomes a blur of people you love, photographs you didn’t know were being taken, enormous amounts of laughter and one very good reason to stay on the dance floor.

A beautiful bride, a flowing gown, a magnificent horse, and the Somerset Garden waiting at the end of the aisle.

Some wedding moments simply take your breath away.

It’s Friday, which means somewhere around here, a bride is arriving.

Her car will be full of bags, dresses, boxes and probably at least three things she was absolutely convinced she would forget.

Her family will start arriving.

The cottages will fill up.

There will be hugs, laughter, last-minute plans and, undoubtedly, somebody asking, “Where shall I put this?”

And that is when a wedding weekend really begins.

Not for a few hours on a Saturday.

But for three whole days.

Time to arrive. Time to settle in. Time to decorate, rehearse, laugh, eat, drink and spend precious time with the people you love before the whirlwind of the wedding day begins.

So, if you're newly engaged and starting to look for your wedding venue, perhaps ask yourself one question:

Do you want a wedding day… or do you want a wedding weekend?

Because they are very different things. ❤️

Some things matter more than the amazing pictures.

There are plenty of beautiful wedding venues.

Beautiful gardens. Beautiful barns. And, of course, beautiful photographs that capture all those moments you never want to forget.

And goodness knows, I love all of those things.

But after all these years, I think the thing I care about most is something you can't really photograph.

It's the feeling a couple has when they leave here on Sunday.

That they didn't just have a beautiful wedding.

They had their wedding.

The one that felt like them. The one where they laughed too much, probably cried a little, danced badly, ate too much cake and wondered where the weekend went.

The photographs will capture the memories — the moments, the people, the details, the things that made the day beautiful.

But the feeling?

That lives somewhere else.

And if, somewhere along the way, I hear a bride or groom say, “That was the best day ever,” well...

That's the bit that gets me. ❤️

One of our favorite compliments is when couples tell us they want their wedding to feel like it is happening in the garden of a beloved family home — just without having to mow the grass, worry about the weather, or wash hundreds of glasses afterwards.

That is the heart of English Country Barn.

A place that feels personal and welcoming, where guests can wander, children can explore, flowers can bloom, and the landscape becomes part of the celebration.

We don’t believe every beautiful wedding needs to look the same.

Some couples arrive and immediately notice the gardens, the trees, the woodland, and the countryside views.

Others notice the little things — the resident cats wandering by, the birdsong, the changing seasons, the feeling that they have arrived somewhere with a story.

Those are usually our people.

Because the most memorable celebrations are not always the ones that feel the most perfect.

They are the ones that feel the most like you.

WHY WE HAVE THE WESSEX CHAPEL

The Wessex Chapel came from a very simple thought.

Many years ago, one of our early weddings was planned as an outdoor ceremony. It rained, the ceremony was moved, and I remember thinking that if that wasn't what the bride had chosen, it shouldn't suddenly become her second-best option simply because the weather had changed.

I thought: that will never happen again.

So I waved my arms around, drew a design on the back of a napkin and the Wessex Chapel was born.

Because choices matter.

Some couples choose the Chapel because that is exactly where they want to get married.

Others choose one of our gardens, knowing that if the weather decides otherwise, they still have a beautiful choice waiting for them.

Either way, the choice stays theirs.

That's how we do things at English Country Barn.

We solve the problems before they become problems, we give our couples choices, and we want them to feel completely relaxed knowing that whatever the weather decides to do, they don't have to compromise on the wedding they chose.

Things nobody tells the groom about his wedding day… 🤍

Everyone talks about the dress.

The flowers.

The bridal suite.

The moment she walks down the aisle.

But there is another person experiencing one of the biggest days of his life…

The groom.

And here are a few things we’ve learned after watching hundreds of wedding days unfold:

✨ You will probably be more nervous than you expect.
Even the calmest groom can feel the weight of the moment. Surround yourself with people who bring calm, laughter, and confidence.

✨ Eat breakfast. Seriously.
The excitement is real, but standing through a ceremony and celebrating all day takes energy. Someone needs to make sure the groom actually eats.

✨ Take a moment to look around.
The day moves faster than you think. Pause. Take in the people who came to celebrate with you. Remember the feeling.

✨ Don’t miss the little moments.
The laughter while getting ready. The stories being told. The final cheers before walking into the next chapter.

✨ Let your people support you.
Your groomsmen aren’t just there for the photos. They are there to remind you to enjoy the journey.

Because your wedding day isn’t just about the moment you say “I do.”

It’s about everything that leads you there.

Things I Couldn't Care Less About…

There are quite a few things about weddings that I couldn't care less about.

I couldn't care less whether your wedding is pink, blue, green or purple. I don't care what flowers you've chosen, what your tables look like or whether you've gone completely traditional or completely off-piste.

What I care about is that you get the wedding you want. That you're happy. That you've chosen the things that matter to you and that, within the realms of possibility and legality, you get to have them.

That's really it.

You do what's important to you. I say that to my couples all the time, and I mean it.

It's your wedding. Not mine.

And I'm perfectly happy with that. ❤️
