An HSA offers a triple federal tax benefit: deductible contributions, tax-free growth and tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses. You need an HSA-eligible health plan to contribute. For 2026, the limits are $4,400 (self-only) and $8,750 (family), plus a $1,000 catch-up at age 55+.
Some people pay current medical bills out of pocket, save the receipts, and leave the HSA invested for later.
