Selling your business for $1 million sounds like a great outcome β€” until $370,000 of it goes to taxes.

That gap exists because most business owners treat taxes as an afterthought instead of part of the plan. The truth is, the tax outcome of a sale is largely determined by decisions made years earlier β€” your entity structure, how you build the business, and whether you've actually planned your exit.

This week's Tax Tip Tuesday breaks down stock sales vs. asset sales, a surprising catch with installment sales, and why exit planning should start from year one.

What will you actually keep after taxes when you sell your business?

Most owners can tell me their asking price instantly. Almost nobody can tell me that number. By the time a buyer's at the table, most of your options to fix it are gone.

This week: what really happens to your tax bill at sale.

Did you know sunglasses can actually qualify as an HSA-eligible expense? 😎

If your doctor recommends wearing sunglasses more often to protect your eyes, that can qualify for an HSA deduction. There's a lot more that can be covered by your HSA than most people realize.

Real client, real numbers. πŸ‘‡

We did a free tax review for a new client's 2024 return. Their old accountant missed depreciation on a rental property ,that's real money that should've been claimed.

But the bigger find? Their HSA distributions were 100% spent on qualified medical expenses, fully legit, but a box never got checked on the return. The IRS taxed it as income and hit them with $1,300 in penalty tax on money they never should have owed.

Total refund once we fixed both: $3,729.

If it's been a while since anyone actually reviewed your return line by line, it might be time. Reach out.

Things that make Brandon this happy: πŸ₯°

His wedding day. His kids being born. Beating Michael at ping pong.

And apparently clients asking about HSAs.

Turns out there's a good reason. HSAs are one of the only accounts that are deductible going in and tax-free coming out.

This week's Tax Tip Tuesday covers HSAs and health insurance deductions, including a mistake we see surprisingly often: business owners paying for health insurance and never actually deducting it.

If you're self-employed and paying your own health insurance out of pocket, those premiums can be 100% deductible.

Not partially. Fully. But there's a right way to set it up, and most people have never had this conversation with their accountant.

Full breakdown this week.
