Trying to track down your tax refund? The IRS has an official tool that lets you check your status in just a few minutes. Here’s how to use it the right way:
Step 1: Visit the IRS website
- Go directly to: https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund
- Click “Get Your Refund Status” and then choose “Where’s My Refund?”
Step 2: Gather your details
- Before you start, make sure you have:
*Your Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN
*Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.)
*The exact refund amount listed on your tax return
Step 3: Enter your information
- Submit your details to view your current status. You’ll see one of the following updates:
*Return Received – The IRS has your return and is processing it.
*Refund Approved – Your refund has been approved and a payment date is available.
*Refund Sent – Your money has been issued (either direct deposit or mailed check).
When can you check?
- About 24 hours after e-filing
- 3–4 days after e-filing a prior-year return
- Around 4 weeks after mailing a paper return
Helpful tip
The system refreshes once per day (usually overnight), so checking multiple times in one day won’t speed up the process.
For your safety, always use the official IRS website to avoid scams and fraudulent links.
