The IRS will begin accepting Returns for Tax Year 2025 on Monday, January 26th, citing most refunds will be issued in less than 21 days.

However, Returns with Child Tax Credit(s) or Earned Income Credit are not expected to begin processing until mid-February, with the Refunds not being released until March 3rd, or after. You can file prior to that day, just know you likely will not receive your refund until after the anticipated release date.

With regards to some of the new Deductions for Tax Years 2025-2028, implemented by the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill", specifically dealing with Overtime and Tips, Employer(s) are NOT required to report your Overtime Hours/Wages separately for 2025, but they MAY report them in Box 14 of your W2, reflected as "FLSA OT Premium". If that coding is NOT present on your W2, you may need to calculate it yourself from your Paystubs. The Deduction is ONLY applicable for the extra 50% in time-and-a-half, not the base hours/wages themself, up to $12,500 (or $25,000 for joint filers). Qualified Tip earnings will still be reported in Box 7 of your W2.

As a reminder, I work/prepare filings out of the Law Firm I also work at in Lexington, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, and primarily after the normal Business Hours of the Firm. Daytime appointments may be worked in providing there's no conflict with the Firm's scheduled Closings. We can also arrange to a drop off of your information to me, where I'll work on the return in the pockets of my downtime, and then let you know once it's done.

Most of you already know how to reach me, but you can call, text, or email [email protected] to schedule your appointment. Any requests that come in in the duration of my Business Day will be responded to as quickly as I am able to get to them. Looking forward to the many hugs and giggles!! 😁

Highlights regarding the announcement made earlier this week by the Treasury Secretary about tax relief due to COVID-19 are as follows:

Filing Deadline- The filing deadline for tax returns remains April 15, 2020. The IRS urges taxpayers who are owed a refund to file as quickly as possible. For those who can't file by the April 15, 2020 deadline, the IRS reminds individual taxpayers that everyone is eligible to request a six-month extension to file their return.

Payment Relief - Individuals- Income tax payment deadlines for individual returns, with a due date of April 15, 2020, are being automatically extended until July 15, 2020, for up to $1 million of their 2019 tax due. This payment relief applies to individuals, trusts and estates. IRS will automatically provide this relief to taxpayers. Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this relief.

NOTE: The State of SC has extended their payment deadline to June 1, 2020 so long as the Return is electronically filed by the April 15, 2020 filing deadline.

Penalties and Interest will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances as of July 16, 2020. If a tax return or extension is filed by April 15, 2020, the taxpayer will automatically avoid interest and penalties on the taxes paid by July 15.

Couple of reminders as we gear up for this year's Tax Season:

1. Payment for your Tax Prep is due when services are rendered. NO EXCEPTIONS!! Preparation/Filing fees will be comparable to what you were charged last year, unless you have a drastic change to your tax circumstances, so plan ahead and schedule your appointment accordingly.

2. If you had Marketplace Insurance (Obamacare) at ANY point in the year, you MUST obtain a Form 1095-A prior to filing. If you did and file without reconciling the Advanced Premium Tax Credit/Subsidy you received to offset the Monthly Premium, the IRS WILL hold up your refund until it is received and reconciled.

3. If applying for the Fuels Tax Credit Relief from SC, you need to have the TAG Number, a Total of the Gallons Purchase (not the amount spent) AND the Maintenance Cost(s)/Breakdown, for each individual automobile being claimed. Each Taxpayer can claim up to two (2) vehicles so long as Registered Individually.

4. The Standard Deduction this year is as follows:

$12,200.00 for Single/Married Filing Separately
$18,350.00 for Head of Household
$24,400.00 for Married Filing Jointly

In order to itemize your deductions, they would need to exceed those figures.

5. The Child Tax Credit remains at $2,000.00 per child, 16 years old and under, of which up to $1,400.00 of that can be Refundable. Dependent Children 17 years, or older can still qualify for the $500.00 Credit. Over 18 will need to be in school.
