A client called to talk about getting remarried. It was a happy call, and it was also full of practical questions… the right combination!

Second marriages raise financial questions that first marriages usually don't. Whose name goes on the house? What happens to retirement accounts that were always meant for children from a first marriage? Whether the beneficiary designations still say what you think they say. How two people who have each managed their own money for years will handle it together now.

None of that takes the joy away from it. Sorting through it early is much easier than untangling it later.

Are you heading into a second marriage? Give the paperwork the same attention as the wedding plans.

I met with a client’s adult son who owns a successful family business. His father’s message to him was simple: "Diversify beyond the business, and don’t let excess cash just sit there."

Before the meeting, I sent an agenda with what I understood his goals to be and a few initial ideas (business cash management, personal cash flow, and a simple rule for “when cash exceeds X, we move some out”).

He reviewed it ahead of time, and our conversation was far more productive.

Sometimes good planning starts with something unglamorous: a clear agenda and a clear next step.

One year of Spanish on Duolingo recently. The app made a small ceremony of it, and I was more pleased than I thought I'd be.

My husband and I laughed about it because if I were traveling to a Spanish-speaking country, I’d still be lost! But I have a “streak”, which means I did something small every day in the direction of growth, instead of wasting time doom scrolling. I took a small step daily toward my goal of becoming bilingual, which is on my bucket list.

The comparison to saving money is almost too easy to make, so I'll keep it brief. Small and consistent is better than ambitious and abandoned, in language and in portfolios both.

I added a widget to my phone that surfaces a random photo from years past every time I look at it, and it has been a delight all month.

Our kids at ages I'd half-forgotten, trips I would not have thought of otherwise, and Kevin looking exactly like Kevin.

It has me thinking about how much of what people spend money on turns into something like this. Almost none of the photos are of purchases. They are of places we went and people we were with, which is roughly what clients tell me when I ask what they are glad they spent money on.

I recommend the widget, with one warning. I have accomplished nothing in an elevator since I set it up.
