BREAKING NEWS: INDEPENDENCE MAN KILLED IN SHOOTING NEAR SYCAMORE; NO ARRESTS MADE AS SUSPECT OR SUSPECTS REMAIN AT LARGE

An Independence man was killed in a shooting near Sycamore early Sunday morning, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed.

Killed in the shooting was Devin Windsor, age 40, of Independence. After the shooting, Windsor was transported by private vehicle to the Wilson Medical Center in Neodesha, where he was pronounced dead .

Sheriff Ron Wade said a male juvenile also suffered non-life threatening injuries and is recovering.

The shooting occurred near county roads 6200 and 3950 north of Sycamore.

Investigators with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) were contacted and are assisting investigators with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Wade said.

The investigation has determined that a large party was taking place at the location when multiple altercations broke out. During one of the altercations, a gunshot was fired, striking both Windsor and the male juvenile.

“This remains an active and complex investigation involving numerous witnesses,” said Wade. “Investigators have been working around the clock to identify the person or person(s) responsible, who remain at large. At this time, investigators have found no evidence indicating there is an ongoing threat to the general public.”

Anyone with information regarding this shooting is urged to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and condolences are with Devin Windsor’s family and loved ones as they deal with this tragic loss. We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of the family during this extremely difficult time. We also ask the public to refrain from spreading rumors, speculation, or false information regarding this investigation. Inaccurate information not only creates unnecessary confusion, but can also negatively impact an active investigation and the people directly affected by this tragedy,” he said.

“We understand the community wants answers, and we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation. These investigations take time, particularly when there are numerous witnesses and a significant amount of information that must be carefully examined. We ask for patience as our investigators continue their work.”

Due to the active and complex nature of this investigation, no additional information will be released at this time. If the investigation reaches a point where additional information can be released without compromising the investigation, the sheriff’s department will provide an update.

Windsor (in photo) was a native of Cherryvale and a graduate of Cherryvale High School. He most recently was the owner or Barndos by Devin, which was a construction company that built barndominimum-style homes.
