The last quarter of the year is where most tax savings get won or lost. Four moves worth making before December closes out:
1. Max out your retirement contributions. Every dollar into a traditional 401(k) or IRA lowers your taxable income today. Don't leave employer match on the table - that's free money you earned.
2. Harvest your losses. If you have investments sitting at a loss, selling them can offset gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income. Unused losses carry forward, so nothing is wasted.
3. Bundle your deductions. Charitable giving, business equipment, and deductible expenses can be pushed into one year to clear the standard deduction threshold instead of being spread thin across two.
4. Check your withholding. If you got a big refund last year, you overpaid all year. Adjust your W-4 now and keep that cash in your pocket instead of lending it to the government interest-free.
Small adjustments before year-end beat scrambling in April every single time.
