📊 Inflation vs. Disinflation vs. Deflation — What’s the Difference?

Many people mistake disinflation for deflation. Remember, inflation is not always bad.

Moderate inflation is part of a healthy economy if wages are above inflation (CPI) which equals “Real Wages.” Example: Inflation 3% and wages growing at 4% = 1% positive real wages.

If you are looking for prices across the board to go back to where they were before 2021, this is likely not going to happen. That is why it is important to not let inflation get out of hand like it did, and for congress to alleviate the U.S. Treasury from printing new money and deploying it into the economy which causes inflation.

This is another reason to have money invested in the stock market to outpace inflation over time so you don't decrease your future purchasing power.

This is also why people & businesses keeping more of their earnings stimulates the economy a sustainable way vs printing money and creating a "bubble or sugar high."

These three terms get thrown around a lot in economic news, but they mean very different things.

1️⃣ Inflation 📈
Prices are rising over time.
Your money buys less than it used to.
Example:
Milk goes from $3.50 → $3.85
Inflation rate example: +3%
👉 Prices are going UP

2️⃣ Disinflation 📉
Prices are still rising, but more slowly.
Example:
Inflation last year: 7%
Inflation this year: 3%
Milk might go from $3.85 → $3.96
👉 Prices are still rising, just slower

This is usually what the Federal Reserve is trying to achieve.

3️⃣ Deflation ❄️📉
Prices are actually falling across the economy.
Example:
Milk goes from $3.85 → $3.60
Inflation rate example: −1%
👉 Prices are going DOWN

This can signal economic weakness because people delay spending and businesses earn less. (food & energy fluctuate between all three of these categories much more often than other categories. That is why “Core Inflation” does not include these categories)
