We want to thank Mike Briggs and his family for their tireless work to grow FIRST (Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types). Mike’s grandson, Adam, was born 18 years ago with ichthyosis, a rare skin disorder that generally presents at birth and can be quite severe. Little was known about the condition back then or if Adam would even survive. The family educated themselves and became actively involved in FIRST, a small grass roots organization at the time. It is now the world’s leading patient advocacy organization dedicated to improving lives and seeking cures for those affected by ichthyosis.
What is ichthyosis? In a nutshell, it's when the body makes too much skin, particularly on the hands, feet and elbows, then sheds it off. The extra skin makes it difficult to walk or to sit on a hard wood seat for extended periods of time. With no pores due to the disease, both hot and cold weather are extremely uncomfortable.
