As Memorial Day weekend wraps up, I keep thinking about what honoring sacrifice really means.

Not just remembering those who fought for our freedoms, but living in a way worthy of that sacrifice.

To stop putting off the things that matter.
To spend time with the people we love.
To help others when we can.
To use our gifts and opportunities intentionally instead of just rushing through life.

That includes being intentional with our finances too, not chasing “more” for the sake of it, but using money as a tool to support the life we truly want to live and the impact we want to have on others.

Freedom is a gift. What we do with it matters. 🇺🇸

If you already have (or are planning to open) a Maryland 529 account, don’t forget about the Maryland Save4College State Contribution Program.

Eligible families may qualify for an additional $250–$500 contribution from the state just for taking the extra application step. 💰

Too often families open the account but miss the state contribution opportunity entirely.

A few key reminders:
✔️ You must apply separately for the state contribution
✔️ There are income and eligibility requirements
✔️ The application deadline is May 31
✔️ Minimum contribution requirements apply depending on income level

Even if you’re still deciding how much college you want to fund for your children, taking advantage of available tax benefits and state contributions can make the process much more manageable over time.

And if you haven’t started a 529 yet, this may be a good reminder to finally check that box. ✔️

Disclosure: This is for educational purposes only and not meant as tax or financial planning advice.

The Save4College State Contribution Program is designed to help lower to middle-income families in Maryland save money for higher education. Start saving today.

Now that tax season is behind us… how did it go?

Did anything surprise you?
Did you owe more than expected or get a refund you weren’t quite sure about?
Do you feel confident everything was done right?

If any of those gave you pause, you’re not alone.

The good news is you don’t have to wait until next March to figure it out. The best time to make changes is now, while everything is still fresh.

A few small adjustments (like updating withholding or estimated payments) can make a big difference next year.

If you’re ready to feel more in control and confident going into 2026, you can sign up to get started. Let’s make this the year taxes feel different.

Do you have unclaimed property out there?

Many people don’t realize you can search to see if there are funds waiting for you. For example, if you’ve ever misplaced a check and never deposited it, the business is eventually required to turn those funds over to the state. From there, you can claim what’s yours.

Maryland recently updated its system, and it’s easier than ever to search and submit a claim. I had unclaimed property sitting out there for years, and even with a name change since it was reported, I was able to submit the documentation and get it approved without much hassle.

It’s worth a quick check… you might find a few extra dollars waiting for you!

I’m planning to attend the upcoming FPA Symposium and wanted to share for any other planners looking for something actually worth their time (and CE credits).

This one covers a pretty relevant mix of what we’re all dealing with right now:

• 2026 economic update from the Federal Reserve

• Planning for aging clients and the impact of dementia

• AI in our industry—boom, bubble, or both?

• Reverse for purchase strategies

• 2026 tax updates + QSBS planning opportunities

Six hours of CFP CE pending approval, but more importantly, it’s practical content you can bring back to your clients right away.

As someone on the MD FPA board, I’ve seen the thought that’s gone into this, and it’s designed to be useful, not just theoretical.

I hope to see you there!

Register now for our 2026 Annual Symposium. We're happy to be on the Towson University Campus this year.

💡 Tax Deadline Reminder

Can’t pay your taxes by April 15?
👉 File an extension anyway.

This is one of the most common (and costly) mistakes I see.

Here’s why it matters:

• Failure-to-file penalty: ~5% per month (up to 25%)
• Failure-to-pay penalty: ~0.5% per month
• Plus interest on anything unpaid

👉 Filing an extension avoids the much larger failure-to-file penalty.

Bottom line: Even if you can’t pay in full, file the extension and pay what you can.

It’s a small step that can save you a meaningful amount in penalties.
