Jay January named new Estacado girls basketball coach
The Lubbock ISD Athletic Department announced today the appointment of Jay January as the new head girls basketball coach at Estacado High School. January currently serves as an assistant coach in the boys basketball program under Tony Wagner and brings extensive coaching experience and a strong track record of athlete development.
Prior to joining Estacado High School, January served as the head girls basketball coach at Burkburnett High School, where he led the team with energy, strategy, and a player-first approach. His coaching career also includes several years as an assistant for both girls and boys programs in Burkburnett, where he was part of multiple coaching staffs recognized with district honors.
“Coaching at Estacado has been a full-circle moment for me, and I’m honored to continue that journey with the girls basketball program,” said January. “This team has so much potential, and I’m committed to helping our student-athletes grow both on and off the court.
I can’t wait to get to work.”
January brings with him a deep understanding of player development, video analysis, and motivational leadership, and is known for building positive team culture and strong relationships with students and families.
“Jay is a passionate educator and coach who understands the culture and expectations at Estacado,” said Mike Meeks, Executive Director of Athletics. “His experience in both boys and girls basketball, along with his commitment to excellence, make him the right fit
to lead our Lady Matadors.”
January has a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences from Midwestern State University and was recently part of the 2025 District 5-4A Basketball Coaching Staff of the Year.
