π¨ IRS ANNOUNCEMENT: NEW PENALTY RELIEF FOR BACK TAXES π¨
If you're facing issues with the IRS, here's some crucial news. The IRS is providing $1 billion in penalty relief for around 4.7 million individuals, businesses, and tax-exempt organizations who missed automated collection reminders during the pandemic.
Due to COVID-19, the IRS halted reminder mailings from February 2022. Despite this, the failure-to-pay penalty still accumulates for those not paying after the initial notice.
To assist taxpayers, the IRS will issue special reminder letters next month, detailing liabilities, easy payment options, and applied penalty relief amounts. This automatic relief applies to eligible taxpayers with assessed tax under $100,000 for tax years 2020 and 2021.
π
Important dates:
-Refunds for penalties already paid start now through January 2024.
-Failure-to-pay penalties resume on April 1, 2024.
-Eligible taxpayers don't need to take action; relief is automatic. If you already paid penalties, expect a refund or credit. Taxpayers with questions can contact the IRS after March 31, 2024.
For those not eligible, other relief options exist, like the reasonable cause criteria or the First-Time Abatement program.
