Due to the impact of Hurricane Milton, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended the federal tax filing and payment deadline for all Florida residents to May 1, 2025.
IRS
This extension applies to:
Individual and business tax returns: Including 2024 returns that would normally be due in March or April 2025.
2023 returns with valid extensions: Taxpayers who had previously obtained extensions for their 2023 returns now have until May 1, 2025, to file. Note that this extension does not apply to payments that were originally due on April 15, 2024.
Quarterly estimated tax payments: Payments originally due on January 15, 2025, and April 15, 2025, are now due by May 1, 2025.
Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns: Returns normally due on October 31, 2024, January 31, 2025, and April 30, 2025, are also extended to the new deadline.
For residents of Doral, located in Miami-Dade County, this extension is particularly relevant. The IRS will automatically apply this relief to taxpayers with an address of record in the disaster area; no additional action is required to receive the extension.

However, if you receive a late filing or payment penalty notice, you should contact the IRS to have the penalty abated. Additionally, if you reside outside the affected area but your records are located within the disaster zone, you may also be eligible for relief and should contact the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227.
It’s important to note that while the federal deadlines have been extended, this relief does not necessarily apply to state tax obligations. Florida does not impose a state income tax; however, if you have tax responsibilities in other states, you should verify whether similar extensions have been granted.
