Q4 starts tomorrow. 3 months feels like a long time but with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming - it will be 2027 before you know it!

Here's 3 quick things you should do for your business BEFORE the end of the year.

1. Schedule a chat with your CPA. The time to execute tax strategy is BEFORE 12/31. Not in January.

2. Check in with your bookkeeper. Are your books fully up to date? Are there any documents that your bookkeeper has been asking you for for months?

3. Review your financials. How is your profit looking? Are you ahead or behind of what you expected? There's still time to adjust before year end!

I got a call from a client last week asking, “Can I afford this?” Thankfully it was an easy answer for him. YES!

It’s not always that simple though. If you don’t have a good grasp of your cash flow you might take a quick peak at the bank account and spend the money. But, you haven’t taken into account other obligations you already have in process.

Here’s three things you can do to help understand your cash flow - and better answer that question, “Can I afford this?”

1. Review your numbers monthly.
Most cash flow problems become obvious early when you consistently review financial reports.

2. Clean up old receivables.
A lot of cash flow issues are simply unpaid invoices sitting too long.

3. Separate business and personal spending.
Mixing expenses creates confusion and makes profitability harder to understand.

Cheers!

Don't try to wing it with your business finances. Things I hear from business owners:

"I think revenue was good last month."
"Payroll feels high."
"I'm pretty sure we're profitable."
"The bank account looks good right now."

All of these statements represent uncertainty and a lack of confidence.

Replace uncertainty with a simple monthly review of your financial statements.

1. Profit and Loss
2. Balance Sheet
3. Cash Flow Statement

When you understand how these 3 statements work, you can stop guessing and start KNOWING.

More revenue does not automatically fix cash flow problems.

A lot of business owners assume that if they just sell more or just grow a little bit more then things will feel easier.

That's not always true!

What you are is what you reproduce. If you have a bad cash flow system to begin with, all you're going to do when you grow is.... have a bigger bad cash flow system!

More customers = more expenses, more payroll, more delayed receivables, more financial confusion.

Without accurate, up to date, monthly bookkeeping growth can actually increase the stress!

Accurate bookkeeping can help you understand your numbers, manage cash intentionally, and finally figure out how to create some more financial margin in your business.

𝐓𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 “𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫” 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞.

I see this happen all of the time with business owners that I talk to. Bookkeeping is not very fun, it tends to fall down to the bottom of the to-do list. If you're a small startup, would you rather go get that sale or categorize your transactions and reconcile your accounts? Sales and doing the work is probably going to win every time.

Bookkeeping gets pushed aside for, "when things slow down."

The problem is that while you are out crushing it and making money your transactions pile up, accounts go un-reconciled, financial statements are inaccurate and unreliable, your decision making gets HARDER because you don't know if your profitable, and finally tax season becomes stressful and hard because you're scrambling to do a whole year of bookkeeping in one week.

Then you call a bookkeeper and we hit you with a big cleanup/catchup proposal.

Small consistent systems of regular monthly or weekly bookkeeping beat the chaos of catching up every time.
