Quick one for the contractors and trades owners here.

Ever finish a strong month on paper but still feel the squeeze in the bank account? You're not imagining it. For construction and trades businesses, a big chunk of your cash gets stuck in two spots: work you've done but haven't billed yet, and the retention money the GC holds until the job wraps.

Profitable on paper, tight in the bank — it's one of the most common things I see. The good news: once you can actually see where that cash is sitting, it stops being a mystery and starts being a plan.

Ever feel like your bank account and your bookkeeping live in two different realities?

You're not imagining it.

I sat down with a contractor last month — his books said he made $40K. His account had $4K in it.

Both numbers were true. He just hadn't been shown why.

Turns out, a chunk of that ""profit"" was sitting in invoices waiting to get paid, and a GC was holding some of it back until the job wrapped.

It wasn't gone. It just hadn't shown up yet.

This trips up SO many good owners — not because they're bad with money, just because nobody ever walked them through where to look.
