We took a social media sabbatical as we wrapped up the April tax deadline, took a moment to catch our breath and we’re finding our rhythm again! (Don’t worry, tax returns definitely never stopped around here!)

Yesterday we found a beautiful co-working space while we were in Bloomington for the day. It was a perfect space for productivity, Zoom calls and focused inbox time in. Grateful for small businesses that create spaces like this for other small businesses. Thank you HIVE 309!

We’re hearing more and more about refunds being delayed this year.

With IRS staffing cuts and system changes, the industry is seeing:

• More delays when something doesn’t match
• More returns flagged for verification
• Slower processing overall

Good news: a delay doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. But, it does mean accuracy matters more than ever. Behind the scenes, this is exactly why we focus so heavily on clean books, thorough review, and proactive planning before anything is filed.

It’s also why we’re not seeing these issues within our client base: this is why we take the extra time to get things right the first time!

Tax law changes and IRS layoffs may delay 2025 tax refunds. However, taxpayers who file electronically and accurately will not likely face issues or delays.

As we head into March and get closer to the March 15 filing deadline for S-Corporations and Partnerships, we’ve been reviewing quite a few first-year businesses that elected S-Corp status right out of the gate.

Here’s a gentle reminder: An S-Corp is not a default setting for starting a business.

Online advice and tax “influencers” often position S-Corps as the automatic next step for saving money. And while S-Corps can offer meaningful tax advantages, those benefits are not automatic.

They require:
• Reasonable compensation and payroll
• Strong bookkeeping
• Basis tracking
• Ongoing compliance
• (In Illinois) replacement tax and additional filings

For many new or lower-profit businesses, a standard LLC structure can be simpler and just as effective.

There’s nothing magical about the election. 🦄

It’s a strategy tool — and strategy tools only work when they match the numbers.
