Okay, guys so I’ve received confirmation (please do not quote me) that the Indiana Department of Workforce Development aka the Unemployment office is not only intercepting State tax refunds but also has the authority to seize your FEDERAL tax refund for overpayment of unemployment benefits.

Again, do not quote me because I have not witnessed this happen as of yet for 2021 tax refunds. At least not the federal piece. Many will slip through the cracks and others will not.

Please please please listen to the people who give sound advice on these matters ahead of time! If you need to agree to a payment plan with them then do so or you should have done so by now. 😒

2 down 1 to go! I decided to beat the odds and remain humble. So many people who are Enrolled Agents advised me to take the exams out of order because Part 2 was more complex than others but I decided to believe in who I am and took them in order. Not only did I pass first try but I scored high! I don’t post my wins too often but I have to express my gratitude for this one. Can we say top 3% 🐐

𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭!!!

I have received several inquiries about the 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘛𝘢𝘹 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵 for this year's tax return filings.** So here is what I've noticed so far from the recent tax briefings.

Unfortunately, there isn't a straightforward answer provided by IRS on this matter, and so this can be a confusing subject for some. The question people are considering is if they can claim a child on their 2021 tax return who 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 claimed on their 2020 tax return? 😕

So what the IRS has mentioned is this:

If you did not claim the dependent on your 2020 tax return and this dependent was not claimed by someone else, then you are eligible to carry this child and claim the full CTC amount.

If the dependent was claimed on a 2020 tax return (by someone other than you) this is where it becomes tricky. If you claim the child in 2021 for the full or remainder CTC amount then the person that was paid during July-December from the advanced payments becomes liable to pay the IRS back the money received.

I advise that if you claimed the child in 2020 and received those advanced payments then you should also be the one who claims the child on your 2021 tax return. This way avoids any refunds that are due from being held up.

There is much more to know about how these credits work and the IRS is focused on the people who try to double-dip. So be careful and always we are happy to help!
