Preparedness starts with practical training.

Dozens of Strongwell team members recently completed Adult CPR certification and first aid training with Appalachian First Aid. The hands-on course covered CPR, AED use, choking response, EpiPen administration, bleeding control, and other essential techniques.

Thank you to Appalachian First Aid and every Strongwell employee who participated. These are valuable skills at work, at home, and throughout our communities.

When infrastructure is installed near electrified rail lines, material selection matters.

Crusader Fence Co., Inc. selected Strongwell’s ® fiberglass architectural handrail system for a safety fence at California’s Burlingame Caltrain Station. Its low electrical conductivity and high strength made the system well suited to helping prevent pedestrian contact with electrified rails.

The lightweight fiberglass components also supported installation between active track lines, where trains traveled at speeds of up to 80 mph. ® fiberglass structural tubing was used to create decorative rings that complemented the black rails and pickets.

What can a faster secondary containment installation look like?

At Xcel Energy’s Bergen Park substation in Evergreen, Colorado, crews installed Strongwell’s COMPOSOLITE® Secondary Containment System in one day and just a few hours of the next. According to the crew, a comparable concrete installation would have taken more than a week.

The system combines ® fiberglass reinforced polymer panels with ® structural shapes, providing a practical alternative to traditional concrete, particularly where installation time and site access matter.

Read the case study:

Chalk another one up for the time-saving COMPOSOLITE® Secondary Containment System! This type of containment is essential for substations. It is even mandated by the EPA because of the potential fo…

What happens to a wind turbine blade after its original service life ends? This week's featured sector article provides an application answer.

Researchers at the University of Houston are exploring structural reuse instead of treating retired blades solely as waste. Their work led to a full-scale highway sign prototype built with decommissioned blade sections serving as primary structural members.

The project highlights a broader opportunity for the composites industry: preserving the engineering already built into durable materials and finding practical new applications for them. Careful testing, modeling, and connection design remain essential when evaluating this type of structural reuse.

Instead of ending up in landfills or being incinerated, retired wind turbine blades can become structural components for transportation infrastructure.

Strongwell team member, William C., was recently featured alongside his Engineering Design classmates at Northeast State Community College as they presented a spica chair to a local family.
Throughout the semester, the students worked together to design and build specialty chairs that help children wearing orthopedic casts sit, rest, and play more comfortably. The recipient family plans to donate their chair to Niswonger Children’s Hospital when it’s no longer needed.
With donated materials and student talent, this thoughtful project is paying it forward - one chair at a time!
