Starting in 2027, donating to K–12 scholarship programs could come with a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700 per person.

New Hampshire has opted into the program, while Maine and Massachusetts had not as of September 14, 2026. But living in a nonparticipating state doesn't necessarily mean you can't qualify.

A new law could make it easier to deduct losses from recent federal disasters, even if you don't itemize.

The Doug LaMalfa Federal Disaster Tax Relief Certainty Act, signed into law on Sept. 11, 2026, extends relief to qualifying losses from federally declared disasters beginning after July 4, 2025, and before January 1, 2027. Qualifying losses above a $500 floor can be added to the standard deduction, and the 10% AGI threshold no longer applies.
