It’s a great time to take stock of those paper files that may no longer be needed.
A helpful general guideline to keep in mind:

Tax returns & supporting documents: typically keep for at least 7 years
Bank statements & bills: usually 1–3 years, unless tied to taxes
Pay stubs: keep until you’ve matched them to your W‑2
Old records with personal information that are no longer needed? Those are great candidates for shredding.
