Nassau County homeowners, here's something a lot of people on Long Island don't realize: you may already qualify for property tax relief you've never claimed, and the programs stack.

A homeowner who is a senior and a veteran can hold three at the same time: Enhanced STAR (School Tax Relief), the Senior Citizens Homeowners Exemption (SCHE), and a Veterans Exemption.

Here's what that looks like in real dollars.
Take a $650,000 Nassau home at a 1.55% effective tax rate, about $10,075 a year.
Stack SCHE (50%) with Enhanced STAR and the bill can drop to roughly $2,500-$3,100. T
hat's $1,500-$2,100 back in your pocket every year.

Exemptions are only half the story. Filing a Nassau County tax grievance through the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) lowers your assessed value on top of any exemptions you hold. Our customers in Nassau County save an average of $1,462 a year, with a 93% success rate on Nassau grievances.

Missed a year? In New York, we can go back and file for prior years too. No upfront cost, and no fee unless you save.

New York's 2026 budget didn't automatically raise the senior property tax exemption income limit to $75,000. It gave local governments the option to adopt that higher limit, up from $50,000. So the relief is real, but only if your town, county, village or school district actually votes it in, and each one decides separately.

Here's how to check what applies where your family lives:

▶️ Call your local assessor's office or check its website for this year.

▶️ Ask about the senior exemption income limit under Real Property Tax Law Section 467, and the exemption percentage.

▶️ Check your school district separately, since it decides on its own.

▶️ Watch for local public-hearing notices.

New York's 2026 law lets localities raise the senior exemption income limit to $75,000. See who qualifies, whether your town adopted it, and how to claim it.

If you're a Pennsylvania senior, renter, widow or widower, or adult with a disability, don't assume you earn too much for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR). Here's the rule that trips people up: only half of your Social Security income counts toward the $48,110 limit. So a $30,000 Social Security year counts as just $15,000, and that pulls a lot of people back under the cap.

A few things worth knowing for the 2025 claim year:

The maximum standard rebate is $1,000.

Renters qualify too; you file a landlord-signed rent certificate instead of a tax bill, and caregivers can file for a qualifying relative.

The deadline was extended to Dec. 31, 2026, and payments begin July 1.

Applying is always free through the state (online via myPATH, by mail with Form PA-1000, or in person at a Department of Revenue office).

We don't file rebate claims ourselves; we just want eligible Pennsylvanians to claim what they're owed. Full guide: https://bit.ly/3TxjBwu

Pennsylvania's Property Tax/Rent Rebate offers eligible seniors, renters, and people with disabilities up to $1,000 for the 2025 claim year. Here are the 2026 income limits, rebate amounts, and how to apply before the December 31, 2026 deadline.

Long Island neighbors, a quick one on your Nassau County property taxes: grieving your assessment is free to file yourself, and the only government fee is $30.

Here's the full picture:

Filing with the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) costs $0.

The $30 is the Small Claims Assessment Review (SCAR) fee, and only if you escalate after a denial. We cover it for our customers.

A grievance can only lower or hold your assessment, never raise it.

If you'd rather not spend 5-10 hours pulling comps and filing forms, we can handle it. Many Nassau firms take 40-50% of your first-year savings; we charge a flat 25% in New York. Our Nassau customers save an average of $1,462 a year, with a 93% success rate and a 4.7 rating across 3,000+ Google reviews.

One thing to watch: the deadline. For 2026, it was March 1, and 2027 is expected around the same date. Miss it and you forfeit the challenge for the whole year.

Filing a Nassau County property tax grievance is free to do yourself, and the only government fee is $30 if you escalate to SCAR. Here is what it really costs.

Prop 11 raised your extra homestead exemption from $10,000 to $60,000.

Combined with the general $140,000 exemption, that's $200,000 in total exemptions, which the Texas Senate estimates saves about $907.87 a year. And once you qualify at 65+, your school district taxes are frozen at that year's amount, even if values or rates climb.

Here's the part people miss: exemptions aren't automatic. You have to apply for the ones you qualify for. We can file your general and senior homestead exemptions for the current year and up to two years back, at no upfront cost.

See how the new $140,000 Texas homestead exemption and $60,000 senior exemption cut your 2025 property tax bill, plus a checklist to save more.

If you own a home on Long Island, odds are your neighbors have already filed a property tax grievance. In our Long Island Homeowner Survey, 39% still hadn't, and you might be one of them.

Here's why it's worth 15 seconds of your time. Many Long Island tax firms charge 50% of your first-year savings. Ownwell charges 25%, so on $692 of savings, you keep $519 instead of $346. And there's no downside to filing: the county can't raise your assessment because you grieved.

One catch: the Nassau grievance window closes around March 31. Miss it, and you wait a full year.

Just got your first property tax bill and felt your stomach drop? You're not alone, and here's the part most first-time homeowners don't realize: that number is an estimate, not a final bill.

Your home actually has three values: its assessed value (used only for taxes), its fair market value (what buyers would pay), and its appraised value (what it's worth). Only the assessed value sets your tax bill, and assessors often get it wrong from mass-appraisal models, outdated sales data, or a simple mistake in your square footage.

So before you accept the number, run this Year 1 checklist:

✅ Review your valuation notice for errors.

✅ Claim every exemption you qualify for.

✅ File your appeal before the deadline.

Not sure where to start? We do it for you. 88% of Ownwell customers received a reduction, saving an average of $774 a year, with no upfront cost; you only pay if you save.

In 2025, more than 51,000 Texas homeowners paid a property tax protest fee and saved nothing on their tax bill. If you've ever wondered what the catch is with protest services, this is it.

Here's how it happens. Some firms charge a flat minimum fee, or a percentage of your savings, whichever is higher. Say a $500,000 home wins a $5,000 reduction. At a 2% tax rate, that's $100 saved. A $150 minimum fee means you're actually down $50. You paid to lose money.

The fee percentage gets all the attention, but the minimum fee is what actually turns a "win" into a loss.

At Ownwell, we do it differently: 25% of your savings, no minimum, no upfront cost. If your bill doesn't go down, you owe nothing.

See the full breakdown: https://bit.ly/4rsbVrS

Texas property taxes are skyrocketing. Stop paying for protest services that don't deliver. Learn why Ownwell’s $0 fee model is the smartest way to save.
