Want stronger cash flow? Start with these three .

1. Invoice promptly.
The longer you wait to bill, the longer you may wait to collect.

2. Review receivables weekly.
Identify overdue payments before they become larger problems.

3. Forecast upcoming expenses.
Know when payroll, taxes, debt payments, and major bills are due.

Small improvements in timing and can make a meaningful difference.

Healthy flow isn't just about making more money. It's about managing when money moves.

Your attorneys recorded 1,000 billable hours.

But how many of those hours turned into revenue?

That's where your realization rate comes in.

One common way to calculate billing realization is:

Amount Billed ÷ Standard Value of Billable Work × 100

If your team records $200,000 worth of billable work but invoices only $170,000, your billing realization rate is 85%.

The missing 15% may reflect discounts, write-downs, or other billing adjustments.

Tracking realization helps you understand how much of your team's work becomes billable revenue.

📊 WHAT WOULD YOUR CFO ASK?

What happens if your business loses 15% of its next quarter?

Let's say your monthly revenue is $100,000.

A 15% decline means you're now bringing in $85,000.

But here's the problem:
Your rent probably didn't decrease.
Your insurance premiums didn't decrease.
Your loan payments didn't decrease.
And your payroll may not decrease either.
Revenue can fall faster than your expenses.

That's why matters.
A good shouldn't only prepare you for growth.

It should prepare you for uncertainty.

Could your business handle a 15% revenue decline?

📊 WHAT WOULD YOUR CFO ASK?

Your business made $200,000 in profit last year.

So, can you afford to give yourself a raise?

Not so fast.

Before increasing your , consider:

💰 Available cash after upcoming expenses
📉 Outstanding debt obligations
📊 Expected revenue and expenses
🏦 Emergency cash reserves
📈 Future investments in the business

A year doesn't automatically mean your business has extra cash to distribute.

The lesson? Your compensation should reflect both business performance and .

When was the last time you evaluated how much your can afford to pay you?

⚖️ Your attorney charges $350 an hour.

But is the firm actually earning $350 for every hour worked?

Not necessarily.

Let's say an attorney records 100 billable hours at $350 per hour.

That's $35,000 in standard billable value.

But after discounts, write-downs, and collection shortfalls, the firm collects $28,000.

$28,000 ÷ 100 hours = $280 per hour.

That's the effective collected hourly rate for this example.

The difference matters because your posted rate isn't always what your firm ultimately realizes.

Are you tracking what your firm actually earns per billable hour?

Your most popular service might not be your most profitable.

Some procedures generate impressive revenue but require significant provider time, supplies, equipment, or support staff.

Others may generate less revenue but produce stronger margins.

That's why healthcare owners should understand profitability by service.

Ask yourself:
Which services generate the most revenue?
Which have the highest direct costs?
Which produce the strongest contribution margins?

More appointments aren't always the answer. Sometimes a better service mix is.

10/22/2026

Your most expensive case might not be your most profitable.

A case generates $50,000 in fees.

Sounds like a win, right?

But what if it required $35,000 in time, support staff, and other case-related costs?

That leaves just $15,000 before allocated firm overhead.

Meanwhile, another case generates $25,000 with only $8,000 in direct costs.

That's $17,000 in contribution from a smaller case.

The lesson? tells you what a case earned. Profitability tells you what it contributed.

Does your firm track profitability by matter?

If not, let's talk. 678-840-6000

🚨 FINANCIAL WAKE-UP CALL

Your practice billed $200,000 last month.

But how much of that money did you actually collect?

Billing and collections are two different things.

Denied claims, delayed reimbursements, patient balances, and collection inefficiencies can all affect cash flow.

That's why healthcare practices should track their net collection rate, not just total charges.

More billing doesn't automatically mean more money in the bank.

The revenue you collect matters more than the charges you submit.
