The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has suffered a legal setback at the Supreme Court of Pakistan after its tax reference was dismissed on grounds of being time-barred at High Court stage, resulting in the loss of what is described as multi-billion rupee legitimate revenue for the national exchequer.

The federal government is reportedly considering the withdrawal of reduced General Sales Tax (GST) rates on a range of products as part of broader tax reform measures being discussed ahead of the FY2026-27 federal budget.

The proposed move is aimed at expanding the tax base, simplifying the taxation framework, and increasing revenue collection. If implemented, products currently benefiting from reduced GST rates could become subject to higher tax rates, potentially impacting retail prices and consumer spending.

Tax reforms have become a key focus of economic policy discussions as authorities seek to strengthen fiscal stability, improve revenue generation, and meet broader economic objectives. Businesses, industry stakeholders, and consumers will be closely monitoring upcoming budget announcements to assess the potential impact on various sectors of the economy.

While no final decisions have been officially announced, the development signals that significant tax policy changes may be under consideration as Pakistan prepares for the next fiscal year.

The FY2026-27 budget is expected to play an important role in shaping the country's economic direction, investment climate, and revenue strategy in the months ahead.

China–Pakistan cooperation is accelerating Pakistan’s shift toward energy self-reliance through major investments in solar power, electric vehicles, and green infrastructure.

With around 38 GW of solar already installed and rising EV adoption, Pakistan is entering a new phase of electrification.

Reports suggest the country has saved billions in fuel imports due to renewable energy expansion led by Chinese technology and financing.

Joint ventures with companies like BAIC and BYD are also boosting local EV assembly and public transport electrification.

Alongside infrastructure, training programs are being launched to develop skilled manpower for Pakistan’s growing renewable energy sector.
