Manila, Philippines - A growing number of Filipino seafarers are being diagnosed with colon cancer, according to health experts and maritime medical practitioners. The alarming trend places colon cancer alongside other serious illnesses affecting seafarers, such as stroke, kidney failure, and liver disease.
Colon cancer, also known as colore**al cancer, begins in the large intestine (colon or re**um). It often starts as small growths called polyps that may become cancerous if left untreated. Medical professionals are urging seafarers to undergo regular health screenings, especially those with a family history of cancer.
Common Symptoms Include:
โข Changes in bowel movement (diarrhea or constipation)
โข Blood in the stool or re**al bleeding
โข Stomach pain, cramps, or bloating
โข Sudden weight loss and persistent fatigue
โข Feeling that the bowel does not completely empty
Why Seafarers Are at Risk:
Experts point to several contributing factors unique to life at sea โ including irregular meals, consumption of processed or frozen food, limited physical activity, chronic stress, and disrupted sleep due to long working hours.
How to Stay Healthy:
Doctors recommend seafarers eat more fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; drink plenty of water; avoid smoking and excessive alcohol; and perform light exercises onboard. Early screening and medical check-ups are also key in preventing serious complications.
