Here’s a quick tip for working out the lump sum you might need for retirement…

1️⃣ Take your planned retirement budget
2️⃣ Subtract NZ Super
3️⃣ Multiply by 20

Example:

Your planned budget is $60,000 per year.

NZ Super for a couple, after tax, is $44,000 per year

Subtracting $44,000 from $60,000 gives you $16,000. Multiply by 20 and you get $320,000.

$320,000 is what you’ll need to save to match that budget of $60,000 for 25 years

Does that seem like a lot?

Or too little?

That’s what you get to decide. This is just a good benchmark to begin with.

Don’t forget, this calculation doesn’t take into account any big expenditures like house maintenance, holidays or gifting to the kids. Those are on top of this.

Now, how does that make you feel?

Confident or Intimidated?

This is the part where I come in.

I can help with strategies to find your perfect number and how to get there.

When you’re ready, let’s talk.

Here’s a quick tip for working out how much you might need in retirement…

1️⃣ Take your post tax household income.
2️⃣ Divide it by 2.

Example:

One person earns $120k, the other $80k. That makes $200k before tax.

After tax, that comes to $154k.

Divide by 2 and you get $77,000 per year or $1,480 per week.

Does that seem like a lot?

Or too little?

That’s what you get to decide. This is just a good level to begin with.

Don’t forget that NZ Super will pay a couple about $44,000 a year after tax (for now!).

So the difference between the $77,000 budget and NZ Super is $33,000.

That’s $33,000 per year that needs to come from your savings/KiwiSaver/investments.

That’s what you’re building up towards.

Now, how does that make you feel?

Confident or Intimidated?

This is the part where I come in.

I can help with strategies to find your perfect number and how to get there.

When you’re ready, let’s talk.

What’s the most common retirement goal I hear from my clients?
It’s not what you think…

It’s not to retire with millions in the bank and sip cocktails on a beach in the Bahamas…

It’s simply to be able to choose when to stop work. On their terms and feeling comfortable about the future.

That’s it.

It sounds unglamorous and simple, but in actual fact, it’s really hard.

Think about it.

You work nearly every day for 40 years.
You always require an income to live.
Your work becomes your identity.
Your family depends on your income.

How do you get off this treadmill?

Many people spend a long time contemplating how they’re going to step away from work.

A lot of people wonder if they have enough to retire.

Everyone single one of them wonders what on earth they’re going to do with all that spare time!

And all of that is normal.

So the goal is not to accumulate untold riches and spend a lavish lifestyle sipping cocktails and driving fancy cars.

Trust me, I’ve tried to convince a few…

The goal is to simply feel ok with stepping off the treadmill.

To feel comfortable with the future.

That you have enough.

That you can let go of work.

Let’s make that happen for you.

Why do I post about retirement on Facebook?
Isn’t everyone on here still working?

Yes, that’s true for most people.
But a lot of people on here are already retired or thinking about it for themselves...

And it’s for them that I’m showing up here and starting these conversations.

So have a think about your own situation:
Are you happy to keep working another 10 years?

Or are you trying to figure out a way to wind down?

If you're in the latter case, then let's have a chat and work out a great exit strategy.

Talk soon.

Are you scrolling Facebook to distract you from thinking about retirement?
Then you've found the right post!

Retirement is a scary thought for most people.
I get that, and my job is simply to make it easier.

💡Here's a tip:
If you're not ready for a chat just yet, then do this at home:

Add up all your investments, like bank savings, KiwiSaver, shares, etc.
Then subtract any debt, like mortgage, car loans, credit cards, etc.

➡️Is the final result more than $0?
Great you're off to a good start. Just keep building.

➡️Is it less than $0?
You've still got work to do, so keep knocking down that debt.

Either way, ask yourself this question:
🤔Am I happy with where I'm at?

That's the start of a good conversation.

Let me know what you find out!

I’m Turin, The Retirement Guy – What do I do?

I’ll help you reach the best retirement you can afford.

I give simple, straightforward advice to my clients to keep them on track and plan for the future.
Whether you’re 65 or 25, there’s always something I can help with.

Finance can be tricky and I’m fairly sure the industry likes it that way!

My job is to demystify a lot of that and help you make good decision that will grow your wealth long term.

What can I help you with?

• Sorting out your budget so you’ve got money to invest
• Getting your KiwiSaver in shape to grow into the future
• Setting up a sidecar fund to your KiwiSaver to boost your
investments further
• Advice on how to invest a windfall such as a house sale or
inheritance, so that you’re making the most of your money.

There are a lot of reasons to get in touch, so give me a try.
Most likely I’ll be able to help with your query, so give me a shout.

Look forward to having a chat.

“I’m too young to think about retirement”
Think again, because it’s never too early…

Are you in your 30’s or 40’s?
If you’ve got a mortgage, then you’re already working through a 20-30 year plan.
That plan is long term debt repayment.

So why not think about the opposite, long term wealth creation?

The same as your rent or mortgage goes out every month, I help clients set up savings and investment plans that build every month.

That way, as your mortgage comes down, your investments go up.

It’s never too early to start, and the longer you’re invested the better!

Too early for retirement planning? I think not.

Let’s have a chat.
