Does child benefit stop when your child turns 18? Your child may be eligible for financial support through DUO!

Many people are unaware that when a child turns 18, Dutch child benefit (kinderbijslag) comes to an end, and in most cases they will also no longer be eligible for the kindgebonden budget (child-related budget).

However, this does not mean that all financial support ends. Young people who continue their education may be eligible for various grants and student loans provided by the Dutch government through DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs).

The grants and loans must be applied for by the young person in their own name, using their own DigiD** through the DUO system.

* Basisbeurs (basic grant)
A monthly grant for eligible students. The amount depends on whether the student lives with their parents or independently. If the student successfully completes their studies, this grant generally does not have to be repaid.
Important: The basisbeurs does not apply in the same way to every type of education or every student. Eligibility depends, among other things, on whether the student is enrolled in an MBO, HBO, or university programme. It is therefore important to check the specific eligibility requirements with DUO.

* Aanvullende beurs (supplementary grant)
Students from families with lower parental incomes may be eligible for an additional monthly grant. In many cases, this also becomes a gift after successfully completing the programme.

* Studentenreisproduct (student travel product)
Free or significantly discounted public transport by train, bus, tram, and metro in the Netherlands.

* Rentedragende lening (student loan)
Students can take out a monthly loan to help finance their studies. This loan must be repaid later, including interest.

* Collegegeldkrediet (tuition fee loan)
A separate loan to cover the costs of tuition fees.

* Levenlanglerenkrediet (lifelong learning loan)
This is primarily intended for people who are no longer eligible for the traditional student financial support or who want to start a new programme later in life.
(We will discuss this option in more detail in a separate article.)

Hungarian and other EU citizens may also be eligible for certain DUO grants and benefits if they study in the Netherlands and, in many cases, meet the requirements for being a โ€œmigrerend werknemerโ€ (EU migrant worker/student).

Not every student is eligible for the same forms of financial support, so it is important to check the available options in good time.

If your child is turning 18 and plans to continue their education in the Netherlands, it is worth looking into the grants and loans available through DUO.

FINANCING ADULT EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS

๐ŸŽ“ No longer eligible for student support? Still want to continue your education? Learn about the Levenlanglerenkrediet (Lifelong Learning Credit)!

Many people think that once they are no longer eligible for the traditional DUO student support schemes, they have to finance further education entirely out of their own pocket. Fortunately, the Netherlands has a specific option for people who want to learn a new profession or further their education as adults.

๐Ÿ“š What is the Levenlanglerenkrediet?

The Levenlanglerenkrediet is a special study loan provided by DUO for people who are no longer eligible for the regular studiefinanciering (student finance) but still want to continue their education.

๐Ÿ‘ค Who can apply?

The loan is generally available to people who:

โœ… have not yet turned 57 (you can apply up to the age of 56);
โœ… are enrolled in a recognized MBO, HBO or university programme;
โœ… are studying full-time, part-time or in a dual programme;
โœ… do not have their tuition or course fees fully covered, for example, by their employer.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If someone already has a Levenlanglerenkrediet when they turn 57, they can generally retain their eligibility until they complete their programme.

๐Ÿ’ถ What can the loan be used for?

The loan can only be used to finance tuition or course fees.

The amount you can borrow depends on the actual tuition or course fee. DUO will never pay out more than the amount you actually have to pay for the programme.

โณ How long can you receive the loan?

For most programmes:

โ€ข up to 4 years for full-time programmes;
โ€ข generally 5 years for part-time programmes;

however, for longer programmes, the eligibility period may also be longer.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Interest

The Levenlanglerenkrediet is a loan, so interest is charged.

In 2026, the interest rate is 2.33%.

๐Ÿ’ณ When do you have to repay the loan?

Repayment starts in the calendar year following the year in which the loan ends.

For example, if you complete your studies in 2026, your repayment obligation will begin in 2027.

The loan must be repaid including interest, generally over a 15-year repayment period.

The monthly repayment amount depends on:

โ€ข the amount you borrowed;
โ€ข the interest rate;
โ€ข your own income;
โ€ข and, where applicable, your partner's income.

โ„น๏ธ The good news is that the Levenlanglerenkrediet is not registered with the Dutch BKR (credit registration system).

๐Ÿ‘‰ The student can apply for the loan through DUO using their own DigiD.

There is no age limit to learning. If you want to learn a new profession, obtain a degree or expand your knowledge and skills, it is worth looking into the Levenlanglerenkrediet.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Is your ex-partner not paying child support? The LBIO can help in the Netherlands!

Many people do not know that there is a government organization in the Netherlands that can help collect child support if the parent who is required to pay does not fulfill their obligation.

This organization is the LBIO (Landelijk Bureau Inning Onderhoudsbijdragen).

๐Ÿ“Œ What does the LBIO do?

The LBIO is a Dutch government organization that, among other things:

โœ… collects unpaid child support;
โœ… can also collect spousal or partner maintenance;
โœ… sends payment demands to the person who is required to pay;
โœ… if necessary, can initiate enforcement measures.

๐Ÿ’ถ When can you ask the LBIO for help?

Generally, when:

โ€ข the amount of child support has been established by a court order or official agreement;
โ€ข at least one monthly child support payment has not been made;
โ€ข the outstanding debt is no more than 6 months old.

๐Ÿ“‹ What can the LBIO do?

If the parent who is required to pay does not pay, the LBIO can:

โ€ข send a formal payment demand;
โ€ข have part of the person's income withheld;
โ€ข contact their employer or the organization paying their benefits;
โ€ข in certain cases, initiate enforcement against a bank account or other sources of income.

๐Ÿ’ฐ How much does it cost?

The LBIO's service is generally free of charge for the parent who is entitled to receive the support.

The costs of collection are generally charged to the person who has accumulated the debt.

๐ŸŒ What happens if the other parent lives abroad?

International cases can be more complicated, but in certain countries the LBIO cooperates with foreign authorities to collect maintenance payments.

๐Ÿ“Œ It is important to know that the LBIO does not determine the amount of child support. The amount is still determined by the court or by an official agreement between the parents.

If your ex-partner is not paying child support, it is worth looking into your options in good time, because the Netherlands has official mechanisms for collecting overdue maintenance payments.

The Brussels II form does not refer to one specific document. Instead, it refers to the certificates (standard forms) issued by courts in family law cases under the Brussels II Regulation.

What is the Brussels II Regulation?
The Brussels II Regulation (currently the Brussels IIb / Brussels II ter Regulation (EU) 2019/1111) governs the following matters within the European Union:
Divorce, legal separation, and marriage annulment.
Matters relating to parental responsibility, such as child custody, access rights, and parental authority.

The purpose of the Regulation is to ensure that court decisions made in one EU Member State can be recognized and enforced quickly in another Member State without the need for separate legal proceedings.
What is meant by a "Brussels II form"?

In practice, the term refers to the EU certificates that confirm a court decision falls within the scope of the Brussels II Regulation.
Examples include:

Certificate relating to a divorce judgment.
Certificate relating to a decision on parental responsibility.
Certificate relating to a decision on child return or rights of access.

These are not forms that the parties complete themselves. Instead:
They are issued by the court that made the decision.
They follow an official EU standard format.
They are typically required when a court decision needs to be recognized or enforced in another EU Member State.

When are they required?
These certificates are commonly requested when:
The parties live in different EU countries following a divorce.
A child moves from one EU country to another.
A foreign authority or court requires the certificate to recognize or enforce the judgment.
