Trade Union Backs Out Of 2-day Warning Strike

The Trade Union Congress, TUC said it will not take part in the nationwide warning strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), scheduled to begin Tuesday.

President of the TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo urged the NLC to intensify dialogue with the government.

“As of today, the need to embark on a nationwide strike hasn’t arisen hence the leadership of congress should intensify the conversation with government so that all grey areas identified could be ironed out within the time frame given”, Osifo said after meeting Labour Minister Simon Lalong.

Lagos Civil Servants Pull Out Of NLC's Warning Strike

Civil Servants in the employ of Lagos State Government have pulled out of the two-day warning strike to be embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)

NLC has said it would embark on two-day nationwide warning strike from Tuesday and Wednesday and would embark on indefinite strike if the Federal Government refused to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has pulled out of the proposed warning strike.

Lagos State civil servants, being members of the TUC has decided not to join the strike.

A statement issued by the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Lagos State Branch, told all its members not to embark on strike on Tuesday.

The statement signed by its Secretary, Aladetan Abiodun, reads: “PROPOSED 2-DAY STRIKE.

“This is to inform all members of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Lagos State Branch that all affiliates of TUC will not be embarking on any proposed strike slated for Tuesday 5th September, 2023.

“We urged all our members to go about their normal business.”

A cursory glance at neighboring countries lays bare Nigeria’s economic backslide.Niger Republic, often cited among the world’s most impoverished nations, values a month’s toil at approximately $60, a minimum wage benchmark. Togo and Benin Republic have set theirs at $87, with Chad trailing at around $110. Across the continent, over a dozen countries have crossed the $100 mark.

Remarkably, only three African nations have an official minimum wage lower than Nigeria’s.
