*The {N}500 Shawarma Sacrifice*
Amaka was a social media queen with a serious {N}500 shawarma habit. Every Friday, without fail, she'd treat herself to the best one from the vendor outside her office. "It's my weekly reward," she'd tell anyone who listened. "You can't skip the small joys!"
Chike, her colleague, would politely decline. He always packed a simple lunch and a small bottle of homemade zobo. Amaka would tease him: "Chike, is the economy that rough? Treat yourself! That {N}500 won't make you a millionaire!"
Chike would just smile, "Maybe not, Amaka, but small drops make a mighty ocean. My 'small joy' is brewing something bigger."
Amaka's "small joy" added up. {N}500 every Friday meant {N}2,000 a month. Over a year, it was a solid {N}24,000 spent on a few minutes of flavour. She never worried about it—it was just {N}500.
Then, a major development: The company announced an opportunity for an advanced certification course essential for a promotion. The course was expensive: {N}25,000.
Amaka had to plead with family and friends to borrow the full amount, leaving her feeling stressed and dependent.
The day they both submitted their registration forms, Chike casually pulled out his new, professional camera. "Remember all those shawarmas I skipped?" he asked, adjusting the lens. "I was saving that {N}24,000 over the last year. It was enough to cover almost all of this course fee, and I still had enough to start building my side-hustle as a photographer."
Amaka stared at her debt and then at his new camera, realizing her weekly {N}500 fleeting pleasure had cost her financial independence and a head start. Chike's 'sacrifice' had silently funded his future.
