🔵 [Tax Chapter] SST Rule Explained: Why RM Must Appear on Your Invoice
If your company issues invoices in USD, SGD, EUR, or other foreign currencies, can you show only the foreign currency amount? 🤔
Actually, no.
If it is a Sales Tax Invoice or Service Tax Invoice, even if the invoice is issued in a foreign currency, the corresponding amount in RM must also be stated.
This is because Sales Tax and Service Tax are both calculated and imposed in Ringgit Malaysia (RM). Therefore, the foreign currency amount must be converted into RM according to JKDM’s requirements as the basis for SST calculation.
📌 The invoice can be issued in USD, SGD, EUR, or other foreign currencies
📌 But the corresponding RM amount must also be stated
📌 The foreign currency amount cannot replace the RM amount
📌 The RM amount must be converted using the exchange rate and date specified under JKDM’s requirements
So, when issuing a foreign currency invoice, it’s not enough to check whether the USD, SGD, or EUR amount is correct — don’t forget to include the RM amount too.
For which exchange rate date and sources should be used, you can refer to our previous post, “SST Foreign Currency Invoice Exchange Rates Explained!”
👉 If your business frequently issues foreign currency invoices, remember to check your invoice format to avoid non-compliance with SST invoice requirements due to a missing RM amount!
