A SMART GUIDE ON HOW TO PLAN AND BUDGET FOR YOUR DAY TO DAY NEEDS

The Hidden Power of a Well-Planned Budget

Have you ever reached the middle of the month wondering, “Where did all my money go?” You’re not alone. Many Kenyans—young professionals, entrepreneurs, and families—earn well but struggle to stay afloat because they fail to plan and budget for their needs.

Budgeting is not about restricting yourself; it’s about empowering yourself. It’s the difference between surviving from salary to salary and living with peace of mind, control, and a sense of direction.

HOW NOT TO SET YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS THAT ACTUALLY WORK IN 2026

Now that we are first approaching the end of 2025, it is time to review, recalibrate and replan your 2025 financial goals that were not achieved.

“A goal without a sustainable plan is just a wish.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

You’re tired of New Year resolutions that fade along the way by February.

You’re done with vague dreams like “save more” or “get rich.”

It’s time to review how you have been setting your SMART financial goals.

Let’s break on not how to set your financial goals

WEAK SMART OR UNREALISTIC GOAL SETTING

Specific - Setting goals with no specific details in place e.g

“Save money” - Save KSh 50,000 for a 6-month emergency fund”

Measurable - Setting goals that can not be measured or quantified e.g

“Pay off debt” - Pay KSh 8,000 monthly toward KSh 120,000 loan”

Achievable - Setting goals that are not realistically achievable e.g

“Buy a Range Rover in 6 months on KSh 45K salary” - Save KSh 15,000/month for a KSh 200K down payment in 14 months”

Relevant - Setting goals that are not relevant to your mission e.g

“Invest in crypto to impress friends” - Build a 3-month emergency fund before investing”

Time-Bound - Setting goals that are all over with no time frame e.g

“Start investing someday” - Invest KSh 5,000 in Sacco by 30th November 2025”

If you are keen you will realize that the above goal setting approach is vague and will be frustrating to achieve in the long run and just maybe, that is the reason why you have not been able to achieve your desired financial goal

Before committing your hard-earned cash to any investment opportunity, pause and ask the RIGHT questions.
Here’s what you MUST know:

GOOD VS BAD DEBT: HOW DO YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE

Not all debt is created equal!

Some debt can grow your wealth… while others quietly drain your future. The secret is knowing the difference.

Here is the break down

✅ Good Debt:

An Investment in Your Future

Good debt works for you, not against you. It helps you build assets, skills, or income streams.

Student Loan (when it leads to higher earning power )

Mortgage (for a home that appreciates in value )

Business Loan (when used to expand a profitable venture.

If it creates value, income, or growth over time, it’s likely good debt.

Now here is Bad Debt:

A Silent Wealth Killer

Bad debt looks nice today but steals from tomorrow. It usually funds wants—not needs—and loses value quickly.

High-interest mobile loans just to survive till payday

Credit card splurges on things that don’t generate value

Car loans for luxury rides that depreciate the moment you drive off

If it costs you more than it brings back—and leaves you stuck in cycles of repayment—it’s bad debt.

The Golden Question to Ask Before Taking Debt

Will this debt make me money, save me money, or increase my long-term value?

If YES ➝ It might be worth it. If NO ➝ Run!

Debt itself isn’t the enemy. The type of debt you take—and how you manage it—makes all the difference.

Good debt = Builds wealth. Bad debt = Destroys wealth.

Master the difference, and you’ll master your financial journey.

There is always room at the top.

What’s the worst debt you’ve ever taken—and what did you learn from it?
