Are there spaces in your aquatics shop that could work just that little bit harder for you? Walk through your shop and look at it through your customer's eyes to find the spots that need some attention. And find those places where they linger because those dwell points could work harder for you.

This was just one of great tips shared in our September 2026 Member Webinar looking at how to make the most of your aquatics shop. Want to hear more? If you're an OATA member head over to the Members' Area of our website and you'll find the full webinar in the Catch Up Online section. We suggest using your smartphone to do this - then plug in your headphones, hit play and listen to the great discussion we had while you do some tank cleaning!

OATA has created a new guide on help coral traders ensure they are selling legal species.

The guide concentrates on hard/stony corals, rather than soft corals, because these are the species most affected by legal restrictions governing what can be legally traded, and from where in the world.

The guide provides the information and resources you need to identify which stony/hard corals can be imported legally and responsibly. Not all corals are listed under CITES. All Scleractinia (stony/hard corals) are listed in Appendix II, alongside certain other coral groups such as Tubipora and Heliopora. Soft corals are not generally CITES-listed, so this guide focuses on stony/hard corals, where CITES controls are most relevant.

The import guide gives a background into CITES regulations and then examines UK laws that apply. It also outlines how to check if the corals you want to import or sell are likely to be granted an import permit allowing them into the UK. There is also a handy flowchart checklist to help.

Find a link to the guide in the comments below.

Do you ask for help and incentives from your suppliers?

It’s always worth asking was just one of the points made by Alistair Blakeman, from Aquadistri UK LTD, when it comes to building long-lasting relationship with the companies that supply your shop.

OATA members – if you missed our third Member Webinar then make sure you catch up on this one. It was a great discussion featuring Fish Shop Matt, Jeremy Gay, and Rob Peck, of The Coral Centre, who shared plenty of ideas on how to use social media, how to build a good relationship with suppliers, how to think about what to stock and what ‘good’ shops are doing differently.

OATA members can check out the full webinar in the Members’ Area of our website. And your business needs to join if you’re not already a member because you’ll want to check this one out!

Are you making the most of the ‘dwell points’ in your shop?

In this clip from our latest Member-only webinar Rob Peck, of The Coral Centre, shares some of the lessons he's learned from a career in large corporate retail and how he's applied those experiences to his own independent specialist shop.

Rob was joined on the panel by Fish Shop Matt, Jeremy Gay and Aquadistri UK LTD's Alastair Blakeman for a wide-ranging discussion packed with ideas for aquatic retailers.

OATA members can check out the full webinar in the Members’ Area of our website. You’ll find it full of ideas around how to approach stocking dry goods and your livestock strategy to building relationships with suppliers, how to use social media and what makes a great aquatic shop.
