📢 Are you asking the right accountant to do the right job?

I often hear business owners say their accountant doesn’t give them advice on how to grow, scale, or improve profitability.

But when I ask if they’ve actually engaged their accountant to do that job, the answer is usually no.

Most business owners rely on their year end compliance accountant, the one who prepares the accounts, tax returns, and filings, and expect them to also advise on business strategy.

That accountant probably only sees your numbers once a year, and often 6–12 months after your year end date. By that time, the events they’re reporting on are long in the past.

If you want to make smarter decisions in real time, you need a commercial accountant working in your business, not just on it once a year.

Someone who can:
✅ Provide current financial insights
✅ Help you plan ahead, not look back
✅ Sit around the boardroom table as your Finance Director or CFO

And then the question comes: "But wouldn't employing a Finance Director full time be expensive?"

and the answer is yes, a full time finance director could be expensive, particularly for SME's.

This is where FRACTIONAL comes in and why it works for SME's

✅ We are not full time nor are we on your payroll
✅ The time you pay for is, aligned to the needs of your business
✅ You are getting Board level support at the fraction of the cost
✅ We take care of the 'accountant duties' and assist in the success of your business

That’s exactly what we do at Peak Accounts & Management Systems.
We act as your outsourced Finance Director, working alongside your existing compliance accountant, to help you make better, faster, more profitable decisions.

Because your business deserves more than hindsight.

It deserves insight.

Fraud Doesn’t Look Like a Villain. Sometimes, It’s Your Right-Hand Person.

A trusted employee handled everything: cash, bank accounts, books. Alone.

For over 10 years, they stole from the company—and the amount they took was mind-boggling. No one noticed.

The lesson? Trust isn’t enough. Controls, checks, and processes might feel boring—but they save your business.

✅ Separate duties
✅ Regular oversight
✅ Document everything

Accounting isn’t dull. Ignoring it is costly.

Every year I had a colleague who’d complain about his accountant.

“They’re rubbish. Only care about their bill. Never give me proper tax advice.”

The truth? He’d handover his paperwork in the last week of January. And it wasn’t just one business, he had a mix of sole trader, partnerships and limited companies.

The accountant didn’t stand a chance to have discussions are give advice with his client if he was to make the deadline and avoid incurring late filing penalties.

The bigger problem? He couldn’t understand why he had a tax bill when he had “no money.” The reason: the company card. It was paying for all sorts of personal things that weren’t business expenses. The money that should have been there to pay his tax was already spent.
He never did get it.

👉 The lesson?

Your accountant can only help you if you give them the time and the tools.

Get paperwork in early.
Keep business and personal separate.
Plan for tax instead of panicking about it.
Don’t leave it until January.

Taking a Holiday as a Business Owner - Easier Said Than Done?

When you run your own business, “holiday” often just means working from a different location or not being able to 'switch off'.

Emails. Client queries. The fear and anxiety of what you’ll come back to.

Switching off is hard, especially if you don’t have a big team behind you.
But you don’t have to do it alone.

You can keep the wheels turning with the right support in place:

⛱️ Peak – your invoices go out, bills get paid, VAT filed on time.

⛱️ Marketing & lead gen partners – keep enquiries flowing while you’re away.

⛱️ Virtual assistants – handle admin, inboxes, and day-to-day queries.

The result? You come back to a business that’s still moving forward, not one that’s been sat on pause.

Because rest isn’t a luxury for business owners, it’s fuel for better decisions, fresh ideas, and renewed energy.

So, when’s your next holiday?

📣 Out of Office – but still working… just in a different uniform this week!

For the rest of this week, I’m swapping spreadsheets for saddle pads and stepping into my other role as my daughter’s show jumping support crew!

She’s competing in her first event of the year after a long break for A Levels, and I’m officially on duty as her lorry driver, groom, chef, and photographer (plus general dog’s body, obviously!).

It’s a family affair too, her little cousin will also be competing with her pony, making this weekend extra special.

Behind the scenes, success in show jumping is just like success in business, it takes preparation, consistency, resilience, and a great support team.

I’ve had horses for 45 years, but we still rely on professionals, vets, farriers, chiropractors, to keep our horses in peak condition. Because no matter how experienced you are, external expertise keeps you on top of your game.

🧠 It’s a reminder that in business too, leaning on the right support whether that’s your accountant, your FD, or your operational partner can make all the difference when the pressure is on.

📧 Emails may take a little longer to reply to while I’m juggling haynets and headcollars, but I’ll respond as soon as I can.

Wish us luck! 🐴✨

🚀 Monday Performance Checks: My Secret to Starting the Week Energised

Every Monday morning, I start my week with a cup of coffee and updating my performance targets from the week before.

I have clear targets set across key areas that drive my business growth, and I’m held accountable by my fellow shareholder.

Together, we discuss the numbers, celebrate the wins, and pinpoint the priority tasks for the week ahead.

This habit isn’t just about tracking progress, it’s about focusing my energy where it counts most and staying motivated to push forward.

It keeps me sharp and aligned with what truly moves the needle.

How do you create energy and focus for your week?

Do you have a Monday ritual that sets you up for success? I’d love to hear your approach!

☕️ Anyone else noticed that Fridays feel different these days?

Remember when Fridays had a buzz?

The whole office in a lighter mood, people heading out for lunch, the radio on?
But driving down an empty M6 last Friday got me thinking.

How many people actually still work on Fridays?

And for those that don’t, do they now get the “Friday feeling” on a Thursday instead?

With more businesses switching to 4 day weeks, flexible hours, or hybrid setups, Friday’s starting to feel less like a finish line and more like a quiet bonus day.

Not a bad thing, by the way. But it does change the energy, doesn’t it?

And if you are still working Fridays, you’re probably getting more done than ever, because fewer people are emailing you!

It’s just one more example of how the way we work is changing, and how important it is for business owners to design their weeks with purpose.

Because whether it’s:
🔹 Letting your team recharge properly
🔹 Giving yourself headspace to work on the business
🔹 Or just making sure your week still has rhythm and focus...

Getting your time and structure right matters just as much as getting your numbers right.

Curious, what does your Friday look like these days?
Full-on? Flexible? Finished by lunch?

Drop me a comment 👇 I’d love to know how others are feeling the shift.

🔍 “We’ll look at that when we’re bigger…”

Is something I hear a lot when I speak to small and growing businesses.

❌ “We don’t need to automate the bookkeeping just yet.”
❌ “We’re not ready for management accounts.”
❌ “A Finance Director sounds great… but we’ll get one later.”

But here’s the thing.

Waiting until you’re bigger is like waiting until you’re in the middle of a storm before checking if the roof leaks.

Financial clarity isn’t a luxury, it’s a foundation.

It helps you make smarter decisions now, not clean up the mess later.
Here’s what happens when you get clarity early:

✅ You spot cashflow issues before they bite.
✅ You understand what’s really driving your profit.
✅ You know whether to hire, invest, or hold back.
✅ You stop working blind, and start leading with confidence.

And let’s be honest, automating your bookkeeping or getting monthly insights isn’t about being “big.”

It’s about being ready to grow on purpose, with your eyes open.

At Peak, we help businesses get this clarity in place early, so they can scale without chaos.
If you’ve ever thought “We’re not there yet,” I’d say, maybe this is the moment to take a look.

⚠️ “My accountant never warned me!”

I hear this a lot from business owners, usually when they receive a surprise tax bill or are having a cash flow crisis!

They’ll say:
“My accountant didn’t tell me this was coming…”
“Why didn’t they help me grow the business?”
“They don't explain the numbers.”

The truth is, its not really their fault:-

Most accountants don’t get involved until after the year (or month) has long since ended. They’re reporting on what’s already happened. That’s their job, and they do it well.

But it’s not the same as financial leadership.
This is where a Finance Director, or a Fractional CFO, makes all the difference.

✅ We sit inside the business with you.
✅ We track what’s happening in real time.
✅ We help you to make decisions with real time information.
✅ And we help you grow with your eyes wide open.

At Peak, we combine tax compliance and strategic insight.

So there are no surprises, just clarity, control, and confident decisions.

If you’ve ever had a sleepless night over a bill, a loan, or your margins, you’re not alone.

And you don’t have to stay in the dark....

Lying in bed wide awake again?

Big day tomorrow. Brain won’t switch off.
We’ve all been there.

As a child, it was Christmas Eve or birthdays. Too excited to sleep. Now? It’s waiting for my young drivers to get home safely
It’s thinking through a big meeting
It’s planning my business growth
And often it’s money.

At Peak Accounts, we help business owners get out of that late at night worry by bringing clarity to their numbers.
✅ Not just bookkeeping
✅ Not just ticking VAT boxes
✅ But real insight into what’s working (and what’s not) in your business.

You might already have someone doing the books. but still feel in the dark.

We shine a light. So you can make decisions with confidence, not guesswork.

If you'd like to see if we can help, let’s talk.
Free no obligation chat. And maybe, a bit more sleep.
