Making Tax Digital is coming, but for most people the real pressure will not come from the rules themselves. It will come from trying to deal with them using bookkeeping that is already behind.
From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over ÂŁ50,000 will need to keep digital records, use compatible software, and send quarterly updates to HMRC. HMRCâs phased rollout then extends to over ÂŁ30,000 from 6 April 2027 and over ÂŁ20,000 from 6 April 2028.
If your records are already messy, MTD will feel harder than it needs to. If your bookkeeping is organised, the transition becomes much easier. HMRCâs guidance confirms that MTD for Income Tax involves creating digital records, sending quarterly updates, and submitting your return through compatible software.
The best time to fix your systems is before this becomes urgent.
