Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now underway for those affected from 6 April 2026.

If you’re a sole trader or landlord, this may change how you keep records and report to HMRC.

You may need to keep digital records, use compatible software, send quarterly updates, and complete your year-end filing.

The key point is simple: MTD is easier when your bookkeeping is already organised.

Tax planning is easier when you don’t leave it until the deadline.

For 2026/27, key checks include your Personal Allowance, ISA allowance, Capital Gains Tax allowance, pension contributions, business expenses and Marriage Allowance eligibility.

Small reviews now can help you avoid missed allowances, messy records and last-minute surprises later.

UK company directors often lose control of tax not because they ignore it, but because they deal with it too late.

Salary, dividends, pensions, relevant life cover, retained profits, Corporation Tax deadlines and director’s loan accounts all need proper planning. HMRC confirms that taking money out of a company can have different tax consequences, including dividend tax and possible director’s loan tax charges where money is owed back to the company.

The real issue is timing.

If you only look at tax after the year ends, many planning options may already be limited.

Good structure gives you more clarity, more control, and fewer surprises.

Corporation Tax is not always as simple as 19% or 25%.

For UK companies, the rate depends on taxable profits. Companies with profits of ÂŁ50,000 or less usually pay the 19% small profits rate. Companies with profits over ÂŁ250,000 usually pay the 25% main rate. Between those limits, Marginal Relief can apply, meaning the effective rate increases gradually.

This is where many businesses get caught out.

If your profits are growing, proper planning matters. The way your business is structured, when costs are reviewed, and how profits are managed can all affect your tax position.

Not sure what rate your company is actually paying?

A lot of business owners start by doing their own accounts.

And at first, it makes sense.

But as the business grows, things change:
records get messier, deadlines feel closer, VAT and tax become more confusing, and cash flow starts to feel harder to manage.

That is usually the point where doing everything yourself stops saving time, and starts creating pressure.

If even one of these signs feels familiar, it may be time to get proper support.

Most startups do not fall behind because the idea was weak.

They fall behind because the financial basics get pushed aside while everything else feels more urgent.

The numbers get ignored.
Too many tools get added.
Bookkeeping gets left behind.
Decisions start getting made on instinct instead of clear data.

That is usually when things begin to feel harder than they should.

Cash flow matters more than most founders realise, and even a profitable business can still run into serious short-term pressure if the numbers are not being tracked properly.

Getting the financial side right early does not just help with compliance. It gives you clearer decisions, better control, and fewer surprises.

If this sounds familiar, now is the time to fix it.

For a lot of people, the stressful part will not be the rule itself.
It will be realising their bookkeeping is not ready for it.

From 6 April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax starts for eligible sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over ÂŁ50,000. If you are in scope, HMRC expects you to keep digital records, use compatible software, and send quarterly updates.

So if your records are behind, your expenses are scattered, or you are still relying on a last-minute catch-up approach, this is the point where that starts to matter more.

If you are not sure whether MTD applies to you, send us a message.

Making Tax Digital is coming, but for most people the real pressure will not come from the rules themselves. It will come from trying to deal with them using bookkeeping that is already behind.

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 will need to keep digital records, use compatible software, and send quarterly updates to HMRC. HMRC’s phased rollout then extends to over £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and over £20,000 from 6 April 2028.

If your records are already messy, MTD will feel harder than it needs to. If your bookkeeping is organised, the transition becomes much easier. HMRC’s guidance confirms that MTD for Income Tax involves creating digital records, sending quarterly updates, and submitting your return through compatible software.

The best time to fix your systems is before this becomes urgent.
