A lot of businesses say they are neurodivergent-friendly.

But that phrase does not mean much on its own. What matters is what it actually feels like to be a client.

Does someone explain what happens next, in plain language, without assuming you already know? Do you get things in writing so you do not have to rely on remembering a conversation? Is there space to ask the same question twice without feeling like a burden? When life gets overwhelming and things slip, is that met with understanding rather than judgement?

That is what neurodivergent-friendly actually looks like in practice. Not a badge. Not a font choice. Not a page on a website that says "we get it."

It is the experience of interacting with a business and coming away feeling clearer, calmer and more in control than when you arrived.

That is what we have tried to build at Artful. Not just an accountancy practice that says the right things, but one where the way we work genuinely reflects the people we work with.

If that sounds like the kind of support you have been looking for, we would love to hear from you.

If you find yourself dreading expense time because you have no idea where half your receipts are, this one is for you.

Most people do not lose receipts because they are disorganised. They lose them because they have too many places for them to end up. The email. The bag. The glove compartment. The photo roll somewhere between a dog picture and a screenshot.

When everything is everywhere, nothing gets filed. And then the guilt kicks in.

The fix is not a better system. It is a smaller one.

One place. That is it. One email folder, one photo album, one app, one physical envelope, one tray on your desk. Pick whichever one you will actually reach for when you are tired and distracted, because that is the only test that matters.

The system does not need to be impressive. It needs to be easy enough that you use it anyway.

A boring system you actually use will always beat a beautiful one you abandon.

Running a business is hard enough without your accountant making you feel like you should already know everything.

But that is the experience a lot of people have had. Jargon they were not expected to question. Processes that assumed a level of organisation that does not always account for how real brains work. The quiet sense that needing things explained again was somehow a problem.

For neurodivergent business owners especially, that can cut deep. When you are already managing executive function, burnout, anxiety or sensory overload, being handed a colour-coded folder and told to stay on top of it is not support. It is just another thing to feel bad about.

It does not have to be that way.

Artful exists because we believe accountancy can be clearer, more human and more accessible, without being any less professional, accurate or deadline-focused. Just with less shame and more actual support.

If you have ever left an accountant's office feeling smaller than when you walked in, you deserve something different.

We would love to show you what that looks like.

Every year, the Self Assessment deadline arrives. And every year, for a lot of small business owners, it brings the same thing.

A low-level dread that starts months before. The return that keeps sliding down the to-do list. The worry that you have missed something. The HMRC correspondence that sits unopened because you are not quite sure what it means.

That cycle is exhausting. And it is not because you are bad at running your business.

It is because tax admin was not designed with you in mind.

At Artful, we offer Self Assessment support for sole traders, freelancers and small business owners who want the process handled clearly and calmly. We will make sure everything is in order, explain what the figures actually mean, and make sure you are not paying more than you need to.

No jargon. No judgement. No last-minute panic.

If your tax return keeps falling to the bottom of the list, or you just want someone in your corner who gets it, we would love to help.

If you have ever stared at a receipt and thought "does this count?" you are not alone.

Knowing what qualifies as a business expense is one of those things people assume they should just know. So when they are not sure, they either claim everything and hope for the best, or claim nothing and quietly overpay their tax bill.
Neither of those feels great.

There is one question that helps cut through the uncertainty:

"Was this cost wholly and exclusively for my business?"

That is the phrase HMRC uses, and it is worth getting familiar with it.

Some costs are clearly business costs. Some are partly personal. And some feel business-related but may not actually be allowable for tax.

Knowing the difference means you are not leaving money on the table or accidentally getting it wrong.

Please do not feel silly for checking.

Tax rules are not always intuitive and nobody is born knowing them.

If you are unsure where something sits, that is exactly the kind of question we are here for.

Do you ever avoid your accounting software because you are scared of what it might say?

You are not the only one.

Sometimes the hardest part is not the numbers themselves. It is the feeling that comes before you look.

Fear. Shame. Confusion. Frustration. Annoyance at yourself. The urge to close the laptop and do literally anything else.

That response makes sense. It is not a character flaw. It is just what happens when something feels loaded and uncertain.

But your numbers are information. They are not a verdict on you as a person or a business owner.

And when you can see them clearly, even the ones that feel uncomfortable, you are in a much better position to work out what to do next.

That is what we help with at Artful. Not just the filing, but helping you feel less afraid of what the numbers are actually saying.

If that sounds like something you need right now, comment 'Help' below.

One of the things that means the most to us is when a client says:

"I finally understand what's going on."

That moment matters, because a lot of people come to us feeling the opposite. Not sure what they're looking at. Not sure what questions to ask. Not sure if they're doing it wrong.

For neurodivergent business owners especially, that fog can be really heavy. Not because the numbers are impossible, but because nobody ever explained them in a way that made sense for how your brain works.

That's what we're here for. Not just to file the paperwork, but to help you see what's actually going on in your business and what to do next.

When things feel clearer, everything else gets a little more manageable.

If that's what you're looking for, we'd love to hear from you. There's a free initial consultation available via the link in our profile.

Three things to check before your tax return:

Have you included all your income? This includes sales, freelance work, platform income and any other business income.

Have you gathered your business expenses? Think software, materials, travel, phone, professional fees, subscriptions and office costs.

Have you checked whether payments on account apply? This is the bit that catches a lot of people out, especially if your profits have increased since last year.

Tax returns are not just about filling in a form and hoping for the best.

They are about knowing what the numbers are actually saying, before the deadline is breathing down your neck.

If any of these three feel wobbly, that is worth looking at sooner rather than later.

There is a particular kind of stress that comes from being behind with your accounts.

It follows you around.

You might be trying to rest, working with a client, making dinner, or lying in bed, and suddenly your brain goes:

"You still haven't sorted that thing."

That constant background noise is exhausting.

Accountancy support should reduce that noise, not add to it.

At Artful, we can help you work out what needs doing, what order to do it in, and how to make it feel a lot more manageable.
