Mileage Allowance Changes – What You Need to Know

Good news for employees and business owners who use their own vehicles for work purposes.

From 6 April 2026, the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rate for cars and vans increased from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles each tax year. The rate for business mileage over 10,000 miles remains at 25p per mile

This is the first increase in the main mileage allowance rate for many years and could provide valuable additional tax-free reimbursement for those regularly travelling for work.

SELF-EMPLOYED OR A LANDLORD?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is nearly here!

📅Your first MTD submission will be due by 7th August 2026.

From April 2026, if your combined income from self-employment and/or property is over £50,000, you’ll need to follow the new MTD rules.

•Keep digital records
•Use HMRC-compatible software
•Submit quarterly updates to HMRC

Remember: The £50,000 threshold is based on your gross income (turnover/rental income), not your profit.

As an ACCA qualified accountant with a UK practising certificate, I can help you:

•Check if MTD applies to you
•Choose the right software
•Set up digital bookkeeping systems
•Stay compliant with HMRC requirements

DO YOU SUBMIT YOUR OWN TAX RETURN? DO YOU WORK IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY? DO YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNTANT? HMRC HAVE MADE BIG CHANGES YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF! MAKING TAX DIGITAL FOR INCOME TAX IS COMING!
Do you currently submit your own tax return? Do you log in and submit via the government gateway account? Do you have a bag of receipts that you sieve through each year?! Perhaps your partner submits for you once a year?
Do you use a personal bank account for business income and expenses? This needs to change, all income and expenses need to go through one account, if you don’t have an account you can use to do this then you need to set one up.

HMRC are introducing MTD for ITSA (income tax self assessment) and you are going to need to start submitting via software EVERY 3 MONTHS.
If your income is above £50,000 you will need to be doing this from April 2026. With the first submission due 7th August 2026 and quarterly thereafter.
If your income is above £30,000 you will need to be complying from April 2027.

Something I get asked a lot! How to add or change a phone number on your HMRC government gateway account. It can be really annoying if your phone number is the only one linked when someone else regularly needs access, a partner, an accountant or bookkeeper. Having to keep sharing the code before it expires.

Follow the below steps to add or amend a number linked

1.)Log in to your government gateway account.
2.)Click manage account along the top menu bar
3.)Click view or change your business tax account details
4.)Manage your government gateway details
5.)Click your government gateway profile
6.)Click how you get access codes
7.)Add another way of getting access codes

Here you will be able to add additional numbers for anyone else who needs access without constantly getting harassed for codes constantly.
