Back from an unforgettable expedition to Mont Blanc. What an experience it was.

Climbing Western Europe’s highest peak tested everything: mindset, endurance, and patience (especially with the ever-changing weather!). But reaching the summit made it all worth it - a truly humbling reminder of what’s possible when you take on big challenges, one step at a time.

As we continue growing the business and supporting clients on their own journeys, this adventure was a powerful parallel - progress often comes after pushing through discomfort, trusting the process, and keeping your eyes on the summit.

Back to work now, with a fresh perspective and a lot of appreciation for both altitude and spreadsheets!

Took this photo at Waddesdon Manor the other day. While most people were admiring the architecture, I was thinking about tax planning.

In theory, a property like this could’ve triggered millions in inheritance tax.
But it didn’t.

Why?

The Conditional Exemption Tax Incentive Scheme.
Here’s the gist:

If you inherit a building, artwork or land of historic or cultural importance, you might be able to claim exemption from inheritance tax or capital gains - as long as you open it up to the public.

That’s why places like Waddesdon are still around. Not just because they’re beautiful - but because someone knew their tax relief options.

You don’t need a manor house to benefit from smart planning.
You just need to stop winging it with HMRC.

Can I Expense My Coffee?

Short answer: Sometimes.
Long answer: It depends if HMRC thinks your cappuccino is a “necessary business expense” or just a Monday mood. 🤣

If you’re grabbing coffee during a client meeting - usually yes.
If it’s your third flat white while checking emails -not really.

SOLD!
Not just a sign in my garden, but a sign that I’ve been buried in paperwork lately — this time not for a client, but for myself. Selling a house is a wild ride of forms, figures, and fine print… It’s basically accountancy with bricks.

It reminded me just how overwhelming finances can feel when it’s your own life on the line. Even when you know what you’re doing, it’s easy to miss a detail or two when emotions (and estate agents) are involved!

I’ve recently been able to enjoy some downtime—something that’s hard to come by during the busy periods! I spent a couple of days wild camping in the mountains - it was an amazing experience which involved an interesting mountain rescue story!

Who knew that accounting could be this historic? Check out these fascinating records from 1314 I came across in Wi******er Cathedral a couple of days ago, showing detailed income and expenses — including livestock supplies. Yes, even back then, accountants were balancing the books!

As an accountant, I'm great with numbers... but writing? Not so much. The other day my son came back from school with the Writers Cup! That got me thinking whether I should turn my accounting practice into a family business early and let him let him handle all the writing for me. After a quick check of child labour laws, I realised that plan is on hold for at least another 10 years.
