Not every budget conversation in my house is about tax…Some of it is about dance 💃

Between the entry fees, costumes, travel, hotels and endless snack stops, it adds up fast. And yes, even as an accountant, I sometimes look at the bank account and wonder how it’s happened.

But this is real life for so many families isnt it?

Whether it’s dance, football, gymnastics, music lessons or just trying to keep up with the general cost of raising children without losing your mind, family life takes budgeting, prioritising, sacrifice and the occasional quiet grumble in the car park.

yes, I may occasionally have a little moan about the cost of competitive dance…
…but I’m also incredibly proud of her.

Even if she is single-handedly keeping motorway services and Urban Outfitters in business 😅

Director of a close company? Your tax return is changing.

From the 2025/26 tax return onwards, directors of close companies will need to provide more detail.

So what is a close company? 👇🏻

Broadly, it’s a company controlled by 5 or fewer people, or by people who are both owners and directors. In reality, that includes a lot of family businesses, husband-and-wife companies, and owner-managed limited companies.

What’s changing? 👇🏻

You’ll now need to include:

• The company name and registered number
• Dividends from that close company separately from other dividends
• Your highest shareholding percentage during the tax year

So no, it’s no longer enough to just enter one total dividend figure and move on. This isn’t a new tax. But it is HMRC asking for much more visibility over what directors are taking from their companies.

Our advice? 👇🏻

•Keep dividend paperwork tidy.
•Make sure shareholdings are clear.
•keep company and personal money properly separate.

Because “I’ll work it out at year end” is exactly the kind of approach that causes problems.

This is one of the easiest areas to underclaim, overclaim, or make a complete mess of. if staff use their own cars, the approved mileage rate still matters.

If you’ve got electric company cars, the advisory rates changed again from 1 March.

When you’re travelling between farms, jobs, suppliers, client meetings, workshops, towns and cities,those little mileage errors stack up quickly.

It looks basic. It is basic.
But it still matters.

Employers and company directors: July will come round quickly.

If you’ve provided benefits or expenses that were not payrolled, this is the time to start checking the detail now, not at the end of June.

This is one of those jobs that looks small until the paperwork is patchy and nobody can remember what was provided, when, or to whom.

Start now while the trail is still warm.

May is when smart sole traders start thinking about 31 July.
If January stung, do not wait until July to panic again.

Now is the time to check:

-what your next payment on account actually is

-whether last year’s figure still reflects reality

-whether a monthly Budget Payment Plan would take the sting out of it
And one more thing: reducing payments on account just because cash is tight is not a strategy.

If profits are genuinely down, fair enough. If they’re not, all you’re doing is delaying the pain.

The earlier you look at it, the more options you have.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now live.

And here’s the bit plenty of sole traders are getting wrong: no quarterly penalties in the first year does not mean no action is needed.

If you’re in scope, you still need digital records.

You still need quarterly updates.

And you still need to be ready long before the summer deadline.

Leaving this until July is exactly how people end up with missing records, duplicated work and a bookkeeping mess. If your records still live in a van, a handbag, a kitchen drawer or six different apps, May is the month
to fix that.

Directors: your company bank account is not your personal current account.

HMRC is consulting on new rules that could require companies to report transactions between the business and its owners, including spending, withdrawals, loans and dividends.

That could mean reporting the amount, date and recipient.

Translation?
That “quick personal payment” through the company account may not stay hidden.

Our advice:
❌ ZERO personal use of the company account
No supermarket shops.
No fuel.
No “I’ll fix it later.”

Messy transactions = messy books, tax issues and expensive clean-ups.

Keep personal and company money separate. Every time.

Let’s be blunt: being a limited company is not the automatic tax win it used to be.

For some businesses, it still makes perfect sense. For others, it really doesn’t.

If most of the profit is coming straight back out to fund your living costs, the gap is tighter than people think once you factor in Corporation Tax, dividend tax, admin, payroll, accounts, Companies House obligations and the general hassle of getting it wrong.

A limited company can still be the right move for protection, profit retention, pension planning or bringing in other shareholders. But “my mate said it saves tax” is not a business structure strategy.

If you’re still trading through a company purely because you assume it must be better, it may be time for a proper review.
