FINALLY!
HMRC have increased the mileage rate for up to 10k miles from 45p to 55p.

Not a huge increase, but a step in the right direction at least!

HMRC reviews are getting more detailed every year. Technology is improving, systems are smarter, and they are cross-checking MORE than people realise.

And once they open the door with one enquiry… it can very quickly lead into previous years too.

A lot of business owners think a review just means sending over a few receipts.

It doesn’t.

They can ask for:
• Bank statements
• Mileage logs
• Invoices
• Receipts
• Vehicle details
• Explanations of transactions
• Evidence behind claims

And they don’t just glance at it.

They compare things.

Mileage against MOT history.
Fuel purchases against journeys claimed.
Dates and times on receipts.
Bank accounts used.
Patterns in spending.

If something doesn’t add up… they WILL question it.

And this is where people come unstuck.

Not always because they’re deliberately doing something wrong either. Sometimes it’s just poor record keeping, guessing figures, claiming things they “thought” were allowed, or mixing personal and business spending together.

That’s why I’m always banging on about keeping proper records.

Because when everything is organised properly?
A review is stressful enough already — but at least you’ve got evidence to back things up.

When records are a mess?
That’s when it becomes painful, expensive, and VERY time consuming.

This is also why having an accountant matters.

You’re not paying someone to type numbers into software.

You’re paying for someone who understands what HMRC expect to see, what raises red flags, how to keep records correctly, and how to protect you if questions ever get asked.

So no… an HMRC review is definitely not something to brush off as “they won’t look too hard.”

Because they absolutely can.

The VAT fuel scale charges changed from 1 May 2026. If you claim VAT on fuel and there’s any personal use, you need to be using the correct rates.

Here’s the bit that catches people out. It’s not based on today’s date, it’s based on when your VAT period starts.

If your VAT quarter started 1 April, you’re still using the old rates. If your VAT quarter started 1 May or later, you need to use the new ones.

Get that wrong and your VAT return isn’t correct. It’s one of those areas that doesn’t look obvious, but HMRC will pick up on it.

If you claim VAT on fuel, check your VAT period start date before you submit. If you’re not sure, ask. It’s a quick fix now and saves you sorting it later.

A client has finished self employment and we have submitted the final self assessment. A little message to wish them good luck for the future and a lovely response 💜

“I’ll just see what’s left at the end…”

No. Please don’t.

That’s how people end up in trouble.

A rough guide?

20–30% of what you earn
(depending on your situation)

Move it out as soon as money comes in.

If you can see it… you’ll spend it.

It’s the first week of the new tax year…

And already you’re thinking:
“Wait… have I missed something?”
“Am I behind?”

That little panic creeping in.

I see it every year.

Let me say this clearly…
You are NOT behind.

It’s day one. Nothing has gone wrong.

You’ve probably seen all the noise about:
• Making Tax Digital
• New rules
• Deadlines flying around

And now it feels like you should have it all sorted already.

You don’t.

Right now, all that actually matters is:
• Keep track of your income
• Keep your expenses organised
• Don’t ignore anything from HMRC

If you’re self-employed earning over £50k, yes MTD has started…
but your first deadline isn’t tomorrow. You’ve got time.

I had someone message me this morning saying they felt behind already…
they hadn’t even started yet.

That’s how overwhelming this time of year can feel.

So here’s your reminder:

You don’t need to know everything today.
You don’t need to figure it out alone.

If you’re unsure where to start, message me.
We’ll get it sorted properly—no stress, no judgement.

I saw a post the other day…

“Ah it’s only 5 transactions, that’ll take 10 minutes.”

Sorry… WHAT? 😂

Because by that logic…

It’s only a few pipes, fixing a leak should take 10 minutes.
It’s only a few wires, rewiring your house should be quick.
It’s only a haircut… how hard can it be?

You see where I’m going with this.

This whole “it’s quick so it should be cheap” mindset needs to do one.

You’re not paying someone for the 10 minutes.

You’re paying for the YEARS.

The training.
The mistakes they’ve already made (so you don’t have to).
The knowledge of what to do… and what NOT to do.

Because those “5 transactions”?

I can guarantee they’re never just 5 transactions.

It’s:
Checking they’re correct making sure they’re categorised properly
Looking at the tax treatment
Spotting anything that shouldn’t be there
Making sure it all ties in with everything else

And doing it properly so you don’t get a lovely letter from HMRC later!

So no… it’s not about how long it takes.

It’s about knowing exactly what you’re doing when you’re doing it.

And if you’re a business owner reading this and someone’s trying to knock your price down because “it’s quick”…

Stand your ground.

You didn’t build your skills overnight.
You didn’t gain your experience in 10 minutes.

Know your worth.

And don’t let anyone tell you your expertise is only worth a tenner and a cup of tea. 😎
