I have had a few conversations lately that start with, “I think I’ll just wait and see what the government does.”

I understand it.

When there is talk of tax changes, regulation changes and more pressure on business, waiting can feel like the safest option. But I don’t think waiting makes the decision easier.

You absolutely don’t need to predict the next Budget to make good decisions now. You just need a clear understanding of your position, what you are trying to achieve and which parts of the plan need to remain flexible.

For some people, that means making sure investments are structured sensibly.

For others, it is using pensions more effectively, thinking about inheritance planning, or making sure a future business sale is not left until the last minute.

The detail will change from person to person but the principles don’t.

If you work with me to build a plan around what matters to you, review it regularly, and leave enough room to adapt when the rules move, then that feels like much more useful than trying to second-guess Westminster from the sidelines.

If uncertainty has left you putting things off, let’s talk it through.

A simple question for anyone running a business this summer….

Could you actually switch off for two weeks?

Not just answer emails from the sun lounger. Properly switch off.

Could the team make decisions without you? Would clients be looked after? Would invoices go out? Would the business keep moving if you were unavailable?

A lot of owners tell me they can’t imagine it.

And I get it. If it’s your business, it’s personal. You’ve built the relationships, made the decisions and carried the responsibility for years.

But if the business can’t function without you, that’s not only tiring, it’s a huge risk.

It can affect the value of the business, your ability to step back in the future, and the pressure your family would be under if something unexpected happened.

The answer is not always to work less. It should be to build more resilience around you.

That might mean better processes, stronger people, clearer ownership arrangements or the right protection in place.

A decent holiday is a nice bonus.

A business that is not entirely dependent on you is even better.

If this has struck a chord, let’s have a conversation when you are back.

There is a bit more optimism around than there has been for a while.

People are booking holidays. Businesses are talking about investment again. There is a sense that, we’re ready to look forward rather than just react.

I think that’s a good thing!

I do think though, the best time to plan is when things are going well. You make better decisions when you are not under pressure.

For a business owner (and I am one), that might mean looking at how much cash the company is carrying, whether you are making the most of pension planning, or what a sale could eventually look like.

For a family, it might mean getting the investments, protection and estate planning all pointing in the same direction.

The government may keep changing the backdrop. We can’t do much about that.

What we can do is avoid letting uncertainty become an excuse to put everything off.

There is a big difference between reacting to the next announcement and having a plan that is flexible enough to cope with change.

That is where good advice earns its keep.

If you want a second pair of eyes on where you are and where you are heading, get in touch.

One thing becoming a dad again has reinforced for me is that work and family are never really separate.

You can try to keep them in neat little boxes, but for most business owners they are closely linked.

The business pays the mortgage. It provides the lifestyle. It creates options for the children. It might fund retirement one day, or be something you want to pass on.

That is why business planning is not just about turnover and profit.
It is also about what happens around the edges.

What would happen at home if you were unable to work for six months? What would happen in the business if you were suddenly out of the picture? Would your family be protected? Would your co-directors know where they stand?

They are not the most cheerful questions to ask in August, I know, but my job is to ask them!

Putting a plan in place is not about expecting something bad to happen. It is about making sure the people closest to you are not left carrying the weight of it if it does.
That is the kind of planning that gives people proper peace of mind.

If your business has grown and the family has grown with it, it may be time for a review.

Don’t you think there’s something about summer that makes people pause for a minute??

A few days away. A quieter Friday Dinner outside with the family. You get a bit of space from the usual pace of work and, quite often, a clearer view of what’s been going on.

For plenty of business owners I speak to, the last couple of years have been about keeping things moving while the goalposts have shifted again and again.

Costs. Tax. Staffing. Interest rates. Government announcements. You name it.
Nobody can control all of that. But you CAN make sure your own house is in order.

Are you holding more cash than you need to? Is the business too reliant on you? Have you reviewed the protection around your income, your family and the company itself? Is your longer-term plan still the right one?

It doesn’t need to be a huge project. Sometimes a proper conversation is enough to highlight what needs attention.

Summer is for enjoying what you’ve worked hard for.
It’s also a good time to make sure it is properly looked after.

If you have been meaning to take a fresh look at things, drop me a message and we’ll arrange a chat.

The older I get, and especially now with a growing family of my own, the more I appreciate the value of having good people around you. In business and in life, you can’t be an expert in everything. You need people you trust. People who’ll tell you the truth, explain things properly and help you make decisions before they become urgent.

That’s how I see financial advice and how I’d like you to see it too

It’s not just about pension or investment planning. It’s about having someone who understands what you’re trying to build, what you’re worried about, who relies on you and what needs protecting.

For business owners and families, those things are often all connected.
The income supports the home. The business supports the income. The planning supports the family. The protection keeps the whole thing from falling apart if life changes suddenly.

That’s the bit I care about.

Helping people protect what they’ve built, make sense of the moving parts and feel a bit more confident about the future, for when life gets bigger, it helps to have someone properly on your side.

A lot of business owners talk about the business and the family as if they’re two completely separate things. When actually they’re often closely linked.

Your business may pay the mortgage. It may fund family holidays. It probably supports your lifestyle. It may employ family members. It might one day be sold, passed on or used to fund retirement.

So when we talk about protecting the business, we’re often talking about protecting the family too.
If the owner (YOU) becomes seriously ill, dies, or can’t work for a long period, it isn’t just a business issue. It can quickly become a family issue, a cashflow issue, a succession issue and a shareholder issue.
That’s why proper planning matters.

Not just “have you got life cover?” But what happens to the shares? Who receives what? Where does the money come from? Can the business keep trading? Is the family treated fairly?
These are big conversations, but they’re important ones. And they’re far easier to have before there’s a problem.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that people who are doing well often have more financial loose ends than they realise. That’s not a criticism by the way. It’s usually a sign they’ve been busy building a life, a career or a business.

The pension from years ago. The protection policy that hasn’t been reviewed since the children were small. The business that’s grown but hasn’t got proper cover in place. The investments that don’t quite link to the bigger plan. The will that’s out of date. The tax position that could do with more thought.
If that sounds like you, you’re not alone!!

But at a certain point, it’s worth stepping back and looking at the full picture because the more successful you become, the more important it is that everything joins up. Good advice isn’t about making things sound complicated, it’s about bringing order to it all, so you can make better decisions and get on with enjoying the life you’ve worked hard to build.

Most people I speak to don’t avoid protection because they don’t care. It’s usually because life is busy, the conversation feels a bit uncomfortable, or no one has ever explained it in a way that feels relevant to them. I understand that.

Nobody really wants to spend an hour talking about illness, death or being unable to work. Especially when things are going well. But the point of protection isn’t to dwell on the worst-case scenario. It’s to make sure that if life does take a turn, the people who rely on you aren’t left trying to figure everything out under pressure.

For a family, that might mean keeping the mortgage paid and maintaining a normal life.

For a business owner, it might mean giving the business breathing space, protecting profits or making sure shares can be dealt with properly.

It’s not about fear. It’s about removing uncertainty from situations where your family or business would already have enough to deal with.
That’s why it matters.

It’s always good to see more positive news around the UK economy although I often think the national picture only tells part of the story. What really matters to most people is their own economy. Their income, their mortgage, their business, their family, their tax position, their plans and the people who rely on them.

That’s the bit you actually live with day to day.

A more positive outlook might give people the confidence to make decisions again, which is no bad thing. But before making big moves, it’s worth looking at whether your own financial position is properly set up.

Are you protected if your income stops? Is your business too dependent on you? Are your investments, pension, protection and estate planning all working in the same direction?

It shouldn’t be and doesn’t need to be overcomplicated. It just needs to be looked at properly.
Headlines come and go, but your own financial security is much more personal.
