If you run your own business, you’ll know how much sits on your shoulder’s day to day. I certainly do – I am a business owner and I work with people like me.

What’s interesting is how many people I speak to who have built something really solid, but have never quite got round to asking the simple question… what happens if I’m not there for a period of time?

Not suggesting the worst, just practically. Income might stop or dip, but the outgoings don’t. Staff still need paying, the business still needs running and your family are still relying on you.

Most people are aware of it, it just gets pushed down the list because everything else feels more immediate.

In reality, it’s usually a fairly straightforward thing to tidy up once you actually sit down and look at it. Give me a call and book in a coffee chat – no obligation to you.

I’ve had a few chats this week where nothing is technically “wrong” but people are saying the same thing in different ways… it just feels a bit tighter than it used to.

The mortgage has crept up, the weekly shop is noticeably more, kids’ activities seem to cost more every term and somehow the same income just doesn’t stretch like it did a couple of years ago (not going to mention fuel!).

What I tend to see is people just absorb it and carry on, because life’s busy and there’s always something more urgent to deal with. But actually, this is exactly the point where a few small changes can make a difference.

It’s rarely about doing anything drastic, more just making sure things are set up properly so your money is working as hard as it can for you.

If it’s been on your mind but you’ve not quite got round to it, it’s probably worth a proper look.

– Someone to sense-check it
– A plan they can actually stick to

That’s it.

I rarely meet people making terrible decisions. Well, not intentionally!

What I do see plenty of is:
– Things spread across different places
– No clear end goal
– No real sense of “are we on track?”

That’s where stress comes from.
Once there’s structure and clarity, most of the noise fades. It’s not about doing more, it’s about making what you’ve got work properly together.

Same situation. Very different outcomes.

I keep saying this - it isn’t about fear — it’s about keeping everything else intact if life throws something at you. And life does throw the proverbial at you!

Your home, your plans, your family’s stability could all change in an instant.

The honest answer is — not dramatically. But definitely thoughtfully.
We don’t have every detail yet, but we do know the areas that tend to shift:
• Tax,
• Retirement,
• Property,
• Inheritance.

The mistake is doing nothing and waiting for clarity.

The smarter approach is checking:
– Are you structured efficiently now?
– Are you overly exposed in one area?
– Could small tweaks now save bigger headaches later?

It’s not actually about reacting it’s about being ready for what might come.

True story – a couple I’ve recently started to work with said this to me last week.

They’re actually doing really well, earning good money, everything looks great from the outside. But when we sat down, they realised they’d never properly joined everything up.

Savings here, pensions there, bits of investing — all good decisions, just not connected.

And it’s a really common issue.
You can be doing everything “right” and still not feel confident about where it’s all heading.

Once it’s pulled together properly, things just feel much clearer.

Most people have adjusted without even realising. Higher bills, higher food shop, more going out each month and we just get on with it.

But very few people have actually updated their plan to reflect it.

I have an issue with this.

Why??

Because what used to be “extra” is now just normal spending, and over time, that just chips away at progress. Your progress!

If your answer is “we’d probably be fine”… I’d challenge you on what that really means.

It’s a question lots of people will avoid not because they’re careless, but because they’ve never properly worked it through.
And I get it. Life’s busy. I’ll do it tomorrow – we ALL DO IT!

However when you do sit down and map it out, one of two things happens:
– Either it’s better than they thought
– Or there are a few gaps they didn’t realise were there

Both are useful.
Ignoring it doesn’t make it go away — it just keeps it unclear.

There’s this “in-between” feeling at the moment.
Things are fine on the surface, income’s good, life’s busy, but if you’re anything like me, there’s a bit of noise in the background.

• Rising costs,
• Talk of tax changes,
• Markets moving around.

What I am noticing is the people who’ve already got a proper plan in place are calm!

The ones who haven’t sorted it yet are starting to feel it, well slightly less calm.

Not because anything’s gone wrong just because they don’t know where they stand.
And that uncertainty tends to build.
What you need to remember is there’s no need to overhaul everything overnight. But some clarity will help bring the calm back!!
