🚗 A common mistake I see among self-employed business owners:

If you use HMRC's approved mileage rates, you cannot also claim fuel, insurance, servicing or repairs separately.

The mileage rate is designed to cover those costs already.

Understanding the difference between mileage and actual vehicle costs can help avoid mistakes when preparing your tax return.

A full diary feels great.

One of my most popular tax tips is already out of date. 😅

When I shared my mileage example earlier this year, 45p per mile was correct.

From 6 April 2026, the simplified mileage rate for cars and goods vehicles increased to:

55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles
25p per mile above 10,000 miles.

So the old example:

5,000 business miles × 45p = £2,250

now becomes:

5,000 business miles × 55p = £2,750

That’s £500 more deductible mileage expense in this example.

A good reminder that tax advice always needs a date attached to it.

Save this updated version if you use simplified mileage for your business. 📌

This applies to simplified mileage. Different rules can apply if you use actual vehicle costs instead.

AI, AML… and apparently football. ⚽️😂
Yesterday was a day away from the spreadsheets at Accountex Summit Manchester.

I listened to some genuinely interesting sessions around AI, AML, technology and the direction the accountancy profession is heading, met some great people and came home with plenty of notes and ideas for KBooks.

One thing I’m reminded of every time I attend an event like this is how quickly our profession keeps changing.

New software. New technology. New compliance requirements. New ways of working with clients.
Running a small practice means the learning never really stops — and I actually really enjoy that part of it.
Although apparently professional development now also includes testing my football skills. ⚽️😅

Back to the spreadsheets today. Slightly more informed. Definitely not ready for the Premier League.

MTD sounds more complicated than it needs to be.

If it applies to you, the important thing is to understand what actually changes — and get your records organised before the deadlines start arriving.

Quarterly updates are not four tax returns.

You can still use Excel.

And you don’t need to change everything overnight.

A little preparation now can make MTD much easier later.
